Civil War Tournament - Round 4

Tue Feb 17, 2015 12:58 am

Hello all, and welcome to round 4 of the civil war tournament. This tournament was started by our own pgr a little while ago. We will be changing things up for this round.

Rules:
1. This will be a simultaneous double played game. Both players will simultaneously be playing both Union and CSA. I will require both sets of orders from the players to resolve the turn. This way, the point imbalance will not matter.
2. Time limit - There will be a time limit for turning in your orders. Except for extenuating circumstances, I will require both turns sent back for processing within 1 week. So if I send turns out on Monday, by next Monday, the players need to send back their orders. Players missing the deadline will be replaced by the alternate. If no alternate available (there's only 1), then the player forfeits.
3. We will be using version 1.04, no beta versions.
4. We will be starting in April of 1861 (long game). We will play upto 56 turns (April 1861-July 1863).
5. Scoring will be the same as round 3.
6. The winners of this round will advance to the finals, and the "not winners" will advance to the consolation round (This way we will know who is 1st, 2nd, and 3rd).

Scoring:
VP will be the basis for advancement, with a NM victory giving a bonus. The NM bonus will be 2000+(100*number of turns remaining). This will prevent an early NM victory from being at an unfair disadvantage for VP against a game that went the full 56 turns.

House Rules:
There are no formal house rules for this round. If the game engine allows it, then it is allowed. No turns should be re-resolved by a host, except in case of an error in the normal running of a turn. All requests for re-running turns, from hosts or players, should be directed to the tournament director. (Hosts should activate error logging for tournament games, so that we can get proper technical support in case of technical problems.)

Settings:
AI: On
Fog of War: On
Delayed Commitment: Max
Foreign Entry: Normal
Historical Attrition: Max
Automated Replacements: Off
Activation Rule: Medium (penalties, but dis-activated can move)
Naval Box Handling: No help (normal rules)
Extended pool: none (far left setting)
Easy Supply: Off

Winning:
Both CSA and Union scores will be added for the 2 games being played simultaneously, with the highest score from each side advancing.

Hosting/Turn Processing:
I will host all 4 games. I will send each player their turn and replay files. Each player will send me back 2 sets of orders (1 set for their Union side, and 1 set for their CSA side). I will then process the turns and send out new turns to the players.
Remember - The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Rule Request: No CW2 beta versions. If a non-beta update becomes available, all tournament players have to agree to an update.

Per the suggestions, I agree that we will stick to 1.04, no beta versions. Also I will do all the hosting, and score reporting (on turns 6, 12, 18, etc.). Winner will be the highest total score of the 2 games (add both sides scores together). The NM win will still be a huge score advantage if you can get it.

We have had our 1st casualty of the round. Skibear has had to resign. This means that Havi is taking his place, but as the games hadn't started yet, Havi gets to face Seraphim from turn 1!

I have to apologize to those following this tournament. I had a large project at work, and missed most of May and June, thus the tournament has gone slower than anticipated. The games are both at/past turn 24 currently. I hope to be able to speed up the playing.

It has come to my attention that Lindi is unable to continue the tournament, and thus he withdraws as well.

Thus the winner of the Seraphim/Havi contest will win the tournament.

Thanks Ace.

Thanks to Pgr and Jim-NC for organizing this tournament.

I also want to thanks my opponents Havi, Skibear, Citizen X and all the participants of the tournament.

Well, I won again! So I keep my champion title… :winner:

If someone wants to organise another tournament in the future, I will gladly accept to put my champion title at stake. Again…

Or maybe I will simply host or arbitrate some games. After all, where is the fun of a tournament if it has always the same victor?

Whatever the future will be, this tournament had been fun. And, in spite of its end, I hope everyone had fun!

In the next days, I will post a small AAR of this last round. If Havi want to comment or if FelixZ and Lindi want to tell us the story of their match, they are obviously welcome.

Regards

Seraphim

AAR Havi vs. Seraphim part 1

Sun Nov 08, 2015 6:05 pm

I should have said “in the next weeks”: “In the next weeks, I will post a small AAR of this last round”…

But here it is: first the AAR of my Union’s game versus Havi’s CSA.

In short: the war went well for the Union.

The most important detail was that I managed to take New Orleans early in the game (in August 1861 I think). Banks botched the first landing and paid it with his life but Butler’s reinforcements took the city.
With several divisions in fortified positions, Butler was able to repel CSA’s counterattack while Hooker’s division took the forts guarding New Orleans one after another. And then attacked the forts guarding Mobile…
Havi tried to hold Mobile but I sent Grant’s army south from Corinth and Havi evacuated the city. In the end of the game, Union had a very strong position in the Deep South.

Without Grant and his army Kentucky was a state wide stalemate. I left a strong garrison at Island 10 (conquered by Grant) ensuring control of this portion of the Mississippi and McClellan remained at Louisville KY facing Beauregard’s army at Bowling Green.

In Missouri, Havi tried to stop the Union’s advance by launching Forrest (and most of the cavalry and Indians force of the Confederation) against the Union’s rear.
Despite inflicting heavy casualties to the rear Union’s garrisons, this raid failed short of his objective: Forrest was unable to capture a depot and withdraw before being totally out of supplies.

He managed to delay Union’s progression in Missouri and Arkansas but could not prevent it.

AAR Havi vs. Seraphim part 2

Sun Nov 08, 2015 6:14 pm

In the Far West the California Column took Tucson and El Paso without real opposition and then launched an invasion of Texas by the west following the Rio Grande. At the last turn they besieged Laredo TX trying to reach the Texan coast (and the support of Union’s fleet).

The eastern front saw little action: an early CSA’s tentative to take Harper’s Ferry, some raids, Lee’s attack against the landed Union’s forces near Richmond (defensive success but not conclusive) and Longstreet’s attack against Kearny’s Corps (also a defensive success but not conclusive).

In the end the North was solidly installed north’s of Rappahannock River, and the South firmly entrenched south’s…

Next, we will see the other game with Havi. I will try not to make you wait two weeks before posting it…

AAR Havi vs. Seraphim part 3

Tue Nov 17, 2015 11:31 am

Here it is: the first part of my CSA’s game against Havi’s USA.

This game was not as one sided as my other game. Actually, it was still indecisive when we stop.

In the east, Magruder’s control of Harper’s Ferry was challenged by Union’s incursions (sometimes divisions sized) trying to isolate Harper’s Ferry from the Confederation. During our game several small battles, a few big battles and a lot of tactical maneuvers and cavalry’s raid take place in the Shenandoah.

I enjoyed some success, including the starvation of an entire USA’s division cut from its supplies sources by Shelby’s cavalry division and Johnston’s victories at Winchester and Hampshire WV.

Yes, it shows a defeat but actually Union’s troops withdraw and were forced to a lengthy retreat in the snow.

After the first successful defense of Harper’s Ferry by Magruder, Johnston, having defeated the Union’s army at Hampshire WV pushed east and took Loudon VA.

You can see in the picture Hamilton’s division at Winchester, isolated and left for die.

However, my efforts to make the Potomac the boundary of the Confederation were thwarted by the Union’s counterattack.

Yes, it shows a victory but at the following battle, the exhausted CSA’s troops retreated leaving Loudon VA in Union’s hand. This timely victory allowed Union to continue its operations in the Shenandoah: Loudon VA is a good base to threaten Harper’s Ferry, Winchester and Strasburg.

Despite a second victory at Harper’s Ferry, ultimately the city was abandoned under Union’s pressure.

This led to the deadlock at the end of our match with Havi: two solid defensive lines and only a few raids to keep our troops busy…

This is for the east; I will tell you soon what happened in the west.

AAR Havi vs. Seraphim part 4

Sat Nov 28, 2015 11:16 am

Here is the last part of my CSA’s game against Havi’s USA: what happened in the west.

In my game as USA, the west saw a lot of actions and the east a little. In this game as CSA it’s the contrary: the eastern front saw a lot of actions (as described in my previous post) and the west less.

But there were still some interesting moves from both sides.

During all the game, Kentucky remained neutral, severely impeding movements of both sides. Grant’s army took Island 10 but failed at the strongly guarded Ft Henry & Donelson.

When Johnston’s army counterattacked, Grant saved his army with a rapid retreat. After Grant retreat, Island 10 was retaken by Breckinridge.

After that, the Kentucky/Tennessee region remained in a standstill. Grant threatened to come back and invade Tennessee again but ultimately end up in Missouri. Lee tried an uninspired invasion of north Kentucky, rapidly aborted. The following planned invasion of Illinois was stopped by the abrupt end of the game.

West of the Mississippi, Springfield MO remained in CSA’s hand, but Price failure to take Jefferson City in September 1861 and VanDorn failure to take Leavenworth in June 1862 lead to a stalemate in Missouri. In the end Grant tried to break this stalemate with an attack at Springfield.

The situation in Missouri was still unresolved by the end of the game.

El Paso remained in CSA’s hands; there were little actions in this zone even after the arrival of the California Column.

Elsewhere, Ft Sumter was retaken by an amphibious attack of the Union but no other progresses were made.

So end my AAR of my games against Havi.
