[RUS] Looking for Red and Southern White players

Sun Dec 30, 2012 2:05 am

I've been playing AGEOD games for around a year now, but never PBEM, and I'm looking for a challenge.

I'm looking to play Siberian Whites in the Admiral Kolchak campaign in RUS.

I can move once per day.

Language: English

Time Zone: Central USA

Feel free to post here or pm me.

==Game Details==
Campaign: Grand Campaign
Red - Altaris
Southern White - Orel
Siberian White - Philo32b

Hosting -Durk, via Dropbox and email
Activation Rule - Standard (no activation ill effects)
Delayed Commitment - Long
Attrition - Standard
Merchant Shipping - Standard (100% income)

House Rules:
Some restrictions on using Interventionalist Forces (such as Japenese, French, British). Can use supplies and materiel (e.g., tanks) donated from Interventionalist countries, though. Interventionalist Forces can be used in their starting region against enemy partisan forces.

Would be glad to play for Southern Whites. Who will host? Is there a possibility to do without the activation rule?

Hi Orel, thanks for the interest in playing!

I have no preference in who will host. I am happy to do so.

For the Activation rule, would you be interested in using the middle option? (Penalties if unactivated, but can always still move.) Isn't the Activation Rule the friend of the Whites? :)

Any preference on the other rules? Shall we use Long delayed commitment and Standard (i.e., non-historical) attrition?

Who is interested in playing the Reds?

The activation rule does give the Whites a bit of an advantage. But usually, I prefer playing without it altogether, to me it simply is a bit inconvenient. Plus, it is widely considered that the Reds have lesser chances for victory than the Whites, so to make it a bit easier for them the activation rule is usually not implemented in games. I would prefer not having it, but if you wish to have the medium option I will have to accept it.

Towards commitment, I never understood what the difference is between long delay and short delay is, so that is up to you.

Attrition, is not a concern either.

My concern is the merchant shipping income. I always prefer having it at max, but if you wish to have something else I am open for debate.

No activation rule at all is fine.

That sounds good to have the Merchant shipping income at 100% (the standard rule).

Any house rules regarding play that you find useful?

I will summarize our choices in the OP, to help any potential Red decide whether to join us.

I'd be interested in taking the Reds. Also, I could probably round a non-playing 3rd party host if you guys wanted.

Would you guys be interested in playing the standard Grand Campaign rather than the Kolchak one? Is there a reason why Kolchak is preferable?

House Rules: When I play, we usually prohibit recognizing independences option, and I usually don't touch the British, French and American land units(except the Greek-French Corps in the south). If you want to, we could make these our house rules, I won't be recognizing independencies regardless of the situation.

Let me guess, are you offering Durk as the third-party host?

I am fine with either campaign. I like the Kolchak one overall better, but in the Grand Campaign there is Markov and Drozdovskiy for the Southern Whites, my favorite two commanders. Plus, the Kolchak coup allows to avoid the lengthy "microwar" period of 1918 and jump right to the time when the armies are assembled.

Hi Altaris, the Grand Campaign instead of Kolchak sounds good to me. And a third-party host would be good--since this is my first PBEM game, that would probably be preferable as I'll have less chance to screw something up for everyone.

Orel, when you say you don't touch Interventionist forces, do you just mean that you don't mess with the locked down ones (such as taking them out of their town to make them more likely to be activated by partisans, for example)? I'd like to use the units that are given to me, such as the few tanks that Siberia gets, unless that unbalances the game against the Reds. I'm happy to make not recognizing independencies a house rule.

I mean the ones that are non-Russian and non-Czech. So, the tanks that you get from Allied shipments you can use. But according to the house rule, let's say the Japanese troops on the far east should not be used on the battleline. Though, I would allow them to be used against partisans in the rear.

I was thinking of Durk for hosting, as he and I have been playing AGEOD games for a long time and he's reliable for getting turns around most days. Checking with him to see if he'd be up for it. I'm fine with other hosting arrangements if you guys prefer that too.

OK, sounds good. if the Japanese troops unlock, I'll keep them in the East.

For the house rule, I will also not use the French in the East and the British in the South, except against partisans in those regions.

Durk says he can host for us, so long as we keep it to one turn a day. Shall we use Dropbox for file distribution? That would be my preferred method.

I'll send you guys Durk's email address, you can send him your email info and we'll work on getting a game under way.

Don't know what dropbox is.

I can host in case there is a problem, so consider me as a reserve solution.

Dropbox is an online service that holds and shares files in the cloud. Sort of like your Window's C: file, except out in there in the internet (and only accessible to you and those you share the location with). I am happy to use dropbox.

That is very nice of Durk to be willing the host for us! I will pm him my info and thank him.

If it is possible then, could I just get an email with the attached turn? Otherwise, you will have to teach me to use dropbox since I never used it before.

The Dropbox website is located here: https://www.dropbox.com - it's super easy to use and install, and I find it far more convenient than email files back and forth.

But if you really don't want to mess with it, you could probably just get Durk to email your files to you.

Just one last question: we are using 1.06a, right? With or without quickfixes? If so, with which quickfix?

Question on activation rule: if Durk has already sent the turn files without activation rules turned off, can he simply switch the option off before processing the next turn to keep it from taking effect, or does he need to restart a brand new game with the option setting and resend?

I tested this with the Finnish Civil War, which has really bad Red generals and short processing times. I started the game with full activation rule on and then turned it off after my orders, before processing the turn. The only general that was inactive and locked was the 1st Army in Petrograd, and this appears to be hard coded into the scenario, because it was replicated when I tried the scenario a second time, after running the first scenario through five years and no inactive Red generals.

So the end result appears that Durk can just change the Activation Rule to off and it will have no effect on our game.

Fun start to the campaign... I enjoy the early 1918 turns when things are smaller scale, gives it a bit more of an epic feel that jumping straight into the frying pan in 1919.

Good luck fellows! (Though the people will not be stopped! - Do you hear the people sing, singing the songs of angry men? It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again!)

I also am enjoying the start to this game. I've come down with a sudden illness today with a concentration-destroying headache, unfortunately, which will delay my turn until at least tomorrow. I will be good for around a turn a day, though, once I kick this.

I am very much enjoying this game. Playing against humans is very different than against the AI.

Yes... AI for AGEOD is actually pretty good, but still no comparison to a human opponent. It's been a LOOONG time since I played a solo game of AGEOD, just a lot more fun pitting wits against human opponents.

That Kazan fight was something. I've never wanted to stop "winning" battles before, but I certainly wanted the ride to stop there. :) Too many more victories like that and my force would have been toast.
