(EAW) PBEM for AAR Players

Sat Apr 25, 2015 5:15 pm

Greetings!

I would be interested in starting up a game, but would favor those players interested in making a detailed, grammatically correct, and artistic AAR. I realize of course that pickings would be slim as many players are not interested in making any AAR and rather would focus on actual gameplay. But I enjoy it, I find it is half the fun.

I was involved in a great game a few months ago, and even though at the time I was swamped with work and could not put in much time into it, I think I still succeeded sufficiently to make something nice. That game ended because the time commitments for my opponent where too demanding on his lifestyle. At the time, I was unwilling to start another game due to being scheduled to travel abroad and the time limitations there where too unpredictable.
But I have come back! And I am excited to plan out a new game, even though I estimate the wait until one is started may be a long one. I have a new job and a lifestyle that would permit more time to put into my game, and am excited to begin.

So! I really am not committed one way or another with the settings, but as a rough idea:

- Delayed Commitment: Up for Debate.
- Foreign Entry: Up for Debate.
- Attrition: Historical.
- Automated Replacements: Up for Debate.
- Battle Planner: Off.
- Activation Rule: Veteran.
- Randomized Generals: Off.
- Naval Boxes: Standard.
- Extended Pool: No.
- Easy Supply: Off.
- Traffic Penalty: Medium.
- Save Replays: As needed.

Preferred Faction: No preference. Although I'd probably play either Central Powers or the whole of the Entente Side.

House Rules:

- No Gamey retreats. (As I did by splitting an army into individual units set on G/G and evaded without a single shot fired.)
- No breaking standard PBEM rules: no viewing opponents turn, no running the next turns, etc.

A few other rules we can haggle into here if you like, I really don't have much of a preference otherwise.

As some of you have guessed, I've copied a chunk of this post from Byrd, that's because that's pretty much how I would play a game too. I just missed getting in on his because I only got back from traveling two days ago and only checked the forums this morning. :-(

Anyways. I'm probably settling in for a long wait. Either contact me here or via PM, or both, sure.
I will post in this thread to notify if the game has been either filled or closed.

Cheers!

Yes, it's a shame you and Byrd aren't playing together and writing an AAR about it, as I think that would have been an excellent read from both sides.

It will come to that eventually though. Unfortunately, exam season only allows one AAR at the time. =(

Hehe, I agree. We have talked over it, and eventually we plan on putting together another game with AAR. :-)

That being said, I'm sure there are many hidden writers out there who could probably blow us all out of the water with their authoritarian genius! We only need to coax them out of the woodwork. :-P

Greetings!

There has been a update to this current advertisement.

We now have a player for the Central Powers!
None other than the experienced old hand: bob.

I confess that I do feel apprehensive about going up against an old hand such as he, being he has been here on the forums since 2012, I assume he is quite familiar with the Ageod engine.
So honestly I am prepared to be thrashed.

If I play as the Western Entente; this may turn out to be either the Franco-Prussian War all over again as I imitate the speediness of the French Downfall.
I'd have to think what the equivalent would be for the Eastern Entente. :-)

Which nicely leads me to the next bit. Even though I initialized this game; I am completely content to play either the Western Entente or Eastern Entente. Both have significant appeal to me.

But if nothing pans out and we do not find another suitable AAR player within the next couple days; I will take on both Entente sides. The quality of the AAR will suffer, but I'd rather get started then wait for weeks.

I am re-posting the settings here as we establish them more firmly.

- Delayed Commitment: Optional. No Preference.
- Foreign Entry: Hard.
- Attrition: Historical.
- Automated Replacements: Optional. Preferably 5%?
- Battle Planner: Off.
- Activation Rule: Veteran.
- Randomized Generals: Off.
- Naval Boxes: Standard.
- Extended Pool: No.
- Easy Supply: Off.
- Traffic Penalty: Medium.
- Save Replays: Optional.

House Rules:

- No Gamey retreats. (As I did by splitting an army into individual units set on G/G and evaded from behind enemy lines.)
- No breaking standard PBEM rules: no viewing opponents turn, no running the next turns, etc.
- The Eastern Entente must trigger the Hindenburg Event.

More possibly to be added later.

One other note, I do not plan to do more then 3-4 turns a week, although my passion may push me to do more.

I recently read on the AlternateHistory Forums this amazing WW2 AAR that incorporated terse, factual statements, dispersed occasionally by little stories on individuals on every front. Examples would be a look into the mind of a Japanese soldier in Mongolia, or a one time appearance of a dockworker in Pearl Harbor, or even a reoccurring look at Commander Bauer in Egypt. It was very engaging and I think I would plan to imitate this style.
Hence, my contentment in an initial slow pace for a game, as I imagine this style will take a little time to write become comfortable and fluent.
