Commanded a cavalry division early in the war. His finest moment was when he acted without orders and reinforced Thomas at Chickamauga possibly saving the Army of the Cumberland from destruction. His troops were also among those that broke the confederate center at Chattanooga. An abrassive personality got him on the wrong side of Grant and kept him from army command.
