Ewell seems like another good opportunity to rate a general a little higher at the Division level than the Corps level. He was "superb" under Jackson during the Valley Campaign of 1862 (see wikipedia entry for some examples).
However, after he recovered from his leg amputation, and was promoted to Corps command in 1863, his performance suffered. Was this due to the injury, or was he simply out of his element at the higher command level? (I'm not going to criticize Ewell for the First Day at Gettysburg and the infamous "Take that hill is practicable" incident. Of his 3 divisions, Rhodes' had taken an absolute pounding, Early's men had been more successful but would need time to reform, and Johnson's division was just getting to the field. Additionally, he had intelligence to suggest that he might be flanked if he made the attack. Would his attack have suceeded if he had sent his men in....debatable.) Ewell also struggled during the 1864 Overland campaign and was eventually removed from command of the II Corps.
