I agree with you ncuman I think that Lee was hoping to destroy the Army of the Potomac or at least Cripple it and maybe take Washington and force a peace with the north or at least keep the Initiative in the Souths Favor. Lee managed to keep his 'Scarecrows' fed for another two years via domestic production and imports such as the Nassau Bacon which was notoriously bad.
