What the hell does the little icon next to combat stance that looks like a sodier with his gun up in a trench or in some cases a cannon mean? I can't figure it out and it's above my and the enemy's units so it would be nice to know.

If you don't what to use one of the free image hosting sites like imageshack, you can directly attach the image to the post as a file. IT wont show as an image but anybody can click in it, download and open it.
To attach search for a clip button over the replay text box.

Actually, you can insert any attached pictures in your posts; in fact, Gray did just that in his post above

OK--my question fits here:
What about the "scissors" icon that appears atop some of one's own units? I've come to assume that it indicates "non-synchronized movement," as it disappears when synchronized movement is ordered. Is that right?
If so, it seems a little unnecessary to me.

I also tough they were scissors since BoA until someone posted recently on the forums they were actually two crossed sabers.
That icon means the stack is ordered to merge with another friendly stack or to intercept an enemy one.
In other words, it appears when your drag and drop the stack over another stack (except on the same region, of course. Then the stack merge instantly).
(i must point that this is always explained in the games tutorials
Somebody skipped through them??

)
Cheers!

That the stack has field taylors who can mend the soldiers uniforms. It gives +5% cohesion recovery

It means that an enemy stack is targeted for interception / follow up by your stack... your stack is on its way to intercept, in other words to "cut" the way of the enemy (hence the cisors!)

Wel thanks for the info everyone. It does seem a little repetitive since you see the stockade entrenchment at the unit's base. guess it's just saying they're entrenched, or really-really entrenched so bring your field taylors. tee hee

On this one: so it's saying your stack is in offensive stance? I wasn't aware of an interception or chase option, although that woul be nice especially for enemy raiders.

Stockade marker at the top = stack is in the process of entrenching
Stockade marker at bottom = the current entrenchment level of the stack
Quite related, but not entirely repetetive

The offensive posture switch is not automatic when intercepting. You have to choose offensive if you want to intercept and engage the enemy.
If not you will follow them and only fight if the enemy is on offensive posture.
In fact yes, its very useful to catch enemy raiders. But they are fast and sneaky. You will need cavalry units and if possible with a nice leader with them.

Do note, though, that if you pursue them into enemy-controlled regions (i.e. where you have less than 5% control), you will be automatically switched to offensive posture.

Using rail to catch up with them is also useful, provided they haven't cut the raillines yet
