Do units upgraqde automaticaly?

Yes. But not all of them. Around a 5% chance a turn.

Bronze artillery upgrades to iron.

Volunteers (the free units) upgrade to militia, then conscripts, then early inf then late.

cavalry conscripts upgrade to early cav then late cav.
