Promotion question

This has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find it in a search or on the Wiki. I just need a game mechanics clarification.

I understand that, in order to promote a leader who is not the overall leader of a stack, it is necessary to remove him (thus making him leader of his own stack) before promoting him. However, does replacing him in the original stack before proceeding to the next turn then invalidate the promotion?

In other words, is it necessary to leave a leader on his own during turn resolution for a promotion to work?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it is

I can answer this for certain ... it does. Just happened to me a few turns ago.

You can check btw. If you put him back in the stack, so that he is no longer an independent commander, the promotion button, even if already pressed earlier, ends up greyed out. :)
