in reading ealier posts it seems that state militia will upgrade to line inf. eventually if so what posture is best ?I'm playing my third grand camp. as union{did'nt get to far in 1 and 2}and have purchased quite a few militia units and they are in comparatively safe area's so does passive help?

Defensive is the way to go. Passive is only really helpful for getting replacements rapidly and maintaining cohesion while marching long distances.
