Naval Losses

Hi folks, after 200 or so PBEM turns and quite a few violent naval clashes I'm not sure I have ever seen a ship sunk. In the main the ships have been Ironclads but I've certainly not seen more than a small handful of other ships sunk. It reminds me a little of RTS games where tanks have hit points and are never destroyed by one hit.

I wonder what other peoples experiences of naval combat are?

After a large battle one fleet seems to be displaced to an adjacent region with some attritional damage. This does not effect the ships speed. Maybe it should and maybe a ship should have to attempt to limp home to port fairly quickly to avoid additional attritional damage or sinking? The player would have to decide to keep the fleet together at reduced speed or split off the disabled ships in the hope that they could make it home alone.

I wouldn't want to see a massive change but a few more sinkings might be more realistic? Anyone know a bit more about the Civil War naval history
than me care to comment?

Cheers, Chris

Well, ships were certainly sunk or foundered in the ACW ...

March '62 - Virginia sinks the Congress and Cumberland
June '62 - six confederate warships sunk in battle of Memphis
Dec. '62 - US gunboat Cairo sinks after mine hit
April '63 - US warship sunk off Charleston
Feb. '64 - Hunley sinks the Housatonic
Apr. '64 - Albermarle sinks Union warship off Norfolk
Aug. '64 - several ships from both sides sunk in battle of Mobile
Oct. '64 - Albermarle sunk after torpedo hit

In the game, I believe I've seen one transport sink so far. :)

Thanks for the info Hel - interesting to hear if many other people have seen ship sinkings. I certainly saw a few in ocean going ships in BoA but not in AACW. In the game I'm playing at the moment I'm wondering if 3 Ironclads at full strength can go up against 12 Ironclads that are extremely low in stength. I'm not using answers on this forum to make my decision as I am about to make my move now but it just occurred to me that I have no idea how the game would resolve such a situation.

Cheers, Chris

I can only asssume that when one of my gunboats.ironclads.blockade runners etc disappears then it has been sunk? In my experience on hard settings the Feds are very good at sinking my ships.

I saw a lot of ship disappear from the map (and the game) after being bombarded by a fort or after a clash with enemy ships. I guess it means they were sunk.
