Training Master

The in-game description for the Training Master skill is:

"This leader provides 1 experience point every turn to all the units in the stack he is in by drilling them"

Several questions:
1. Does one experience point correspond to one star in the regimental display?
2. If no, how many points represent a star?
3. Does it matter if units are simply loose in the stack or must they be brigaded or made into a division with said leader for the trait to work?

  1. No
  2. I think 5, but I also think that there can be a variance there, so it might be a bit more or a bit less than 5 (the last part is more or less speculation on my part, though)
  3. A stack is a stack is a stack isn't a unit ;) I.e. loose in the stack should be sufficient. :)

There is a ProgRate value in the database for each model. It may be the number of experience points per star. In general:

conscripts, most warships, cavalry - 5
regular infantry, sharpshooters, pontooneers - 10
artillery, support, volunteers & militia - 20

In my experience, cavalry earn stars faster than anything else, but that may just be from the way I use them [up].

Quite possible :)

I also think that it requires progressively more experience points as you accumulate experience levels(?) to get the next level

So a Conscript INF regiment with 5 EXP gets his first STAR... but a small "bad-trick"... Once it turns into a line Regiment as his prograte is changed it loses his STAR (but stil 5 EXP).

Second STAR costs TWICE cost, Third 3x cost and so on.

So, a cavalry with PROGRATE 5 gets his first STAR at 5 EXP, his 2nd at 15 and his 3rd at 30!

Yes ! cav gets STARS easily. An INF with 29 EXP is just 1 STAR, while a CAV 30 is 3 STARS.

Also, Training helps upgrading, so a 5 EXP conscript (with 1 STAR) can upgrade to LINE INF faster. (Upgrading this way makes lose some EXP)

Coregonas found the right formula.

Someone :siffle: told me after some research....

Well im my last big game (well I lost) I did tried to pick 2 Corps (one in each front) with Bragg/Hardee as division leaders --- thet remained static during long longtime in strategic sites. All recruits were there for drill. -> Around 180 EXP points every turn (A division!)

By Mid 62 , Nearly all my divisions were silvered (without firing a shot), I could see eventually a golden one...

But too much static does not allows for a win.

Trying leader mod -> Hardee is just a 2* since beginning so he loses drill skill, can not do the trick!

This will be a little bit out of the topic, but since somebody brought this up, i want to ask the questions that were in my mind for some time.

1- The ProgRate for Black Troops in the models folder is 5. What's the main reason behind this? Their late entrance to the game? Their high will of fight (fighting against slavery)? Because this rate makes them formidable troops easier than other troops.

2- If i'm not wrong, having replacements decreases the experience points of an element. So when an element loses men and have them replaced, they lose experience points, so maybe an experience star according to this. Is it true? Anyone know how it works?

3- The ProgRate of commanders is 10. But when they are promoted to the upper rank, they lose some experience points (a loss of 2 exp. points when a 1* promotes to 2* as far as i can remember, but i'm not sure). But it is not like the troops, they don't lose exp. points due to replacement. Is this a fixed number? And why does it happen?

Thanks in advance.

1 - mostly an error I would say.

2 - you would lose half your experience if you were to replace all the element.

3 - this is 50% of their experience I believe. Because commanding at a higher rank, they can't apply everything they learnt at a lower rank.

This might be slightly exploitive, so I thought I would mention it here: You can add two Training Master Generals to a stack and add 2 experience points to an element every single turn.

Are these two guys supposed to teach different stuff so that the xp gain doubles? I.e. Hardee teaches 'aim and kill' and Bragg teaches 'walk this way' ?

And yes, I have made the 'super duper training camp' mistake (on hard), while 50% of my army is drilled into heroes in New Orleans, the Union takes Richmond :( .

OK. Thank you Pocus.

1.- I prefer thinking of this about those black troops want to fight with more determination, so WAD for me.

Anyway, difference is just a +0,5 average bonus...

2.- Until 108 at least I detected no experience was lost if a single step remained in the regiment. So a 3 STARS Line infantry with 50 men left holds his 3 STARS even fully replaced to 2000 men.

Didnt know about replacement a lost regiment in a brigade... I understand you mean a full replaced unit gets half the experience if replaced from scratch?

HA! :niark:

Reminds me of the old Viking joke, "Pillage and loot first, THEN burn".
