a big HI for all, specially for Rafiki

Tue Feb 12, 2008 2:13 pm

Well, HI to you ppl.

New strategy-gamer and new in this forum. I'm uruguayan, 17 y/o, recently finished school, working as barmaid and living by myself. I like history and politics so much, and come from a very "politic-fanatic" family (and frecuently arguing for this reason)...for one side a leftist (not commies, much more like anarchists) for the other a nazi grandfather (and not a monster, a very lovely person)... so, advancing in time, "peronistas" (that's a political filiation in Argentina, where relatives lived some time, and simpatyzers with the "tupamaros" movement (urban leftist guerrilla in Uruguay at the end of the 60's and begining of the 70's)...

Did I forget something? yes, an uncle priest. So, even if I'm non catholic (neither christian) I'm very familiar with some religious problems.

Recently I finished with a boyfriend who introduced me to the strategy games, and I find myself in heaven.

Toooo much.

------------------------

I made a question in the spanish forum cause my english is very limited and I'm lazy, but Rafiki invited me to make the question here:

Well, I have been playing for four days -intensivly- and after an introductory game in "easy-low agr" thinked that I was capable to jump to a "normal-normal" one (I was tempted to put it in agressive, but it says that the AI could be non prudent, so I leave it on normal).

All was ok, I was playing CSA and winning (hardly, with a lot of panic-full moments, but advancing in KY and MISS) but I get bored with a lot of stupid battle results.

For example, I put a militia and an arty in a city in KY, they trenchered, in one specific turn had two extra units in that province (both were in transit), and, to my surprise, there was a yankee arty so happy, like making a picnic ( :8o: )...

Then I decided to leave three of the units in defensive for not losing that adventage, and put the fourth in agressive for starting a battle. Of the two non trenchered units, I chosed for pull the trigger an arty (supossing that could use the range aganist the enemy arty, and that a cavalry attack could be like the "ligth brigade charge"...

So:
In one stack, one militia and one arty-12, deffensive, in trenches lvl 2.
In another stack one cavalry, not in trench, deffensive position.
In the last stack, another 12 arty, on aggresive position.

The yankee supermen:
One arty.

Outcome:
I had 280 KIA, and lossed the battle (but not the province)...
the f*cking yankee spacetroopers, zero deads...
zero,
ze-ro,
ZERO :8o: :8o: :8o:

I dont want to be reiterative, buy it happened several times. I put another example as a footnote, if somebody is interested... but the idea is the same.

-----------

Well, somebody in the spanish forum suggest me that is possible that the enemy figthes only one of my units a time, till the others are out of the battle... is that possible?

Maybe that's the anser, cause I always put the units separated, for not having command-points penalties...

I'm not sure but I remember have readed that only corps practice that of "marching to the sound of guns" (please confirmation) , but that's logic if the units are in different provinces... shoul I supose that I have my soldiers playing cards and telling dirty stories while their comrades are figthing at half a mile????

---------------------------------

THE REITERATIVE FOOTNOTE: Four militias in defensive attitude (all in lvl 2 trench, but separated in four differen stacks) vs two militias, one infantry and one cavalry... and they rolled over me. Dont say in wikiACW that the defender, specially in trenchs, have all adventages?
What happens with the 3-1 attaking ratio?

Only army corps have an effective chance of using the "march to the sound..." rule.

When there are many stacks in a region, as you have outlined above, more often then not, your units will fight the enemy piecemeal. Furthermore, placing the stacks in defensive posture means that they will not move out and try to force an engagement.

In your first example, only the artillery set to aggressive position will have actively tried to engage an enemy column. What's more, if the enemy had a defensive stance, it would have been your artillery doing the attacking, and unsupported at that!

Hi solnegro!

I had just answered you on the spanish forum... sorry for the delay, but today i had a bad day at work :grr: :p leure: :grr: :p leure:

I think its what W.Barksdale says... its better to have some CP penalty that make independent stacks that don't support each other.
And also, its much easier to manage! :niark:

Off topic:
thats what i call an interesting background!! :coeurs:  :niark:

With you, Sandra (the graphic designer of BoA and AACW :coeurs: ) and Athenea (the living Ai of the games :tournepas ) we already have three woman aboard!
That must be an all time record for a wargame forum!! :niark:

Cheers!

Hi solnegro and welcome -

re: the battle results - don't think of all casualties as KIA. Think of them as captured and paroled, or permanently MIA, and it will make more sense.

A Confederate artillery battery has left its trenches, and is marching down a nearby dirt road, looking for trouble. Suddenly, they realize they've found some. There is an unlimbered yankee battery that was in hidden positions along the treeline (did I mention the nearby treeline?) Looks like the Yanks have loaded with double-shot cannister for such close-range work . . . results: 280 captured confederates, or 280 dead confederates (Hobson's choice).

Oh, that's all then, no more spreading-in-the-same-province!!!

I'll consider this a very reconfortante experience (dont know the translation, but is the same as recovering cohesion at individual lvl :gardavou: ) cause at least this makes clear that the enemies spacetroopers arent using ak-47 or sable-lasers.

Thank to you all and please sign for my "official petition" (writing that just now).
