How does this command work? Most of the time I can't use it. The one time I have used it was in a city. The graphics for the town didn't change. I did get level 8 entrenchment. But I think you can get level 8 entrenchment just by standing still.

I dont remember exactly but as in BoA you needed 1 Supply and 1 Artillery (2 artillery perhaps), then click on the button, then wait for some days for construction.

Dont remember if both units are to be "selected".

The same was for depots, 2 supply units were used instead

You need two supply wagons and 4 artillary of any type. You highlight them and press the build fortification button which should become depressable when this is done.

You get a little brick square icon in the city graphic when the fort is built. This looks different than the entrenchment icon.

I usually use captured/ low value artillery to build a fort, to get rid of it.

Building a depot where there is no city creates a little city 'piece' on the board, so I bet you could build a depot and then a fort if you wanted to.

I suspect that a fort needs to be built in a city. Not at all sure, though.

I've built a depot in texas over a harbor on river (the one close to Arkansas) and it turned out to be a city icon. It should be possible if it's a real city to build a depot...u get the bricks (but u still need to put in more guns afterwards) but this essentially while we see a city icon is still a depot. And as far as i know we can't build a fort on a depot....or can we?

Because if we can it does make sense to build a depot in the open and then a fort over it, but basically this means a total consumption of 6 supply carts and 4 arty (and u still need to put more arty in) which is a suicide...especially for CSA.

It would be so damn nice to build a fort directly in the open without having to go through the depot first....still the question remains: can we build a fort in the open at all?

A high risk strategy but useful if you want to have offensive campaigns to take back Missouri and Kentucky as CSA. Especially as I dont like to rebuild railroads in case of a fed counter atack in force - also I found as useful a way as I found yet for using Waties Indians as early warning system for attacks on my advanced depots? However it is a long part of game but it was just so much fun doing it and it even worked once I had figured out the best way of going about it?
