conflicting orders

Twice I've had the situation where the game reports that a commander has issued conflicting orders, and has been placed in a defensive posture. In neither case could I ever determine what the problem was. Anyone know how to figure it out?

This is an ingame message which is a bit "chrome"...in essence it means the leader failed his activation 'die-roll' and stays unactivated for the turn...

This happens indeed when your commander is not activated and march into a very hostile region, forcing him to switch automatically to offensive posture. As soon as he gets a small foothold though, he will be reverted to defensive posture (and he will suffer a big penalty if caught in such region).

Hi Pocus, I get this message now under very different circumstances. I have in a region 95% control and 1 Army stack, 1 Corps stack and 1 independent Division. The Army and Corps are besieging Fredericksburg while the Division is set to assault the town.
All that happens is that the conflicting orders message appears for the Division and no action takes place. I have attempted this twice now.
I will send the save game file to you.
Cheers, Chris

Why does the leader fail to activate if it indicated he was active when the order was issued? Why does it only seem to apply when entering a hostile region, and not for something like carrying out an assault on a fort, or forming a division?

I got it, thanks Chris.
The leader can be put automatically in offensive posture even if not active, if he enters a region without control.
