Hey

In my latest game theunion attacked Petersburg but my FIXED units did not release after...WHY ?? I had units in the AREA that battled.

I have had the ENEMY SEIGE(sp) my towns before and my unit did not release. I figured they had to be ATTACKED. This time the UNION attacked units in the area. So why did my guys not release after ???

How can you tell the difference between a fixed & a static milita unit?

IIRC, the unit tooltip give that information, e.g. "Fixed for 2 turns" "Fixed till attacked" or "Static and can never-ever move ever" .

(Exact wording may vary ;) )

Also note that if one unit in a stack is static, the entire stack is static. It can be a small pain to find out what it is that immobilizes the stack and "get rid of it", i.e. seperate it from the stack.

Hey

Well, Seeing that you are new to the game,Rafiki :innocent: :fleb: The tool tip will say something like UNIT PERMENANTLY FIXED unless attacked. (OH there I go again use'n CAPs :bonk: )
So, Back to my Question..WHY DID MY UNITS NOT RELEASE AFTER AN ATTACK ON THE REGION MY FIXED TROOP WERE IN ??
Did the city itself have to be attacked ?? I think the Fixed units were in the Combat but not sure.

There are also some units (fort batteries are a good example) that in addition say that they are emplaced and cannot be moved outside the region. I take that to mean that it doesn't help if they are attacked; they'll stay put. I called it "static", the game calls it "emplaced", but I warned that I might have the wording wrong :)

Could be wrong, though, and this is evidently something that not too many know too much about. A discussion such as this might pool our knowledge, or perhaps even attract someone who actually has a good understanding of this, but that remains to be seen.

My other point is that when you write in caps, it can easily be taken as shouting, and piling a few "rude" smileys on top of it strengthens that impression. I'll admit that the point was well-hidden, but that's what I have in return for trying to make light of it rather than spelling it out. The criticism was meant to be constructive; if it failed in that, I'll be the first to wish that it should've been put differently, if done at all.

Fixed units in cities will only be released if they get besieged or assaulted.

Well, You see I can learn new stuff. I just Cap things to bring it to the point. I guess I will just use " " next time.

As far as the units...they were INF units....
Also,I have had this happen several times as the union in PBEM, CAV units raid the N.East cities and I see the Seige Icon on the next turn but the units inside still never got released.

P.S. if it happens again I will pay more attention to the battle report to see if they were actually in the Battle

Fixed units have a lock on the unit icon, and a lock on the envelope. Static units only have a lock on the envelope. Units that are in the process of being built are static.

Being emplaced does not keep a unit like a fort battery from moving. Emplaced units can move ... VERY SLOWLY :niark: , except by rail, where they move one region a day just like anything else. If you cannot move an emplaced unit at all, then it is either static, or fixed, or both, in addition to being emplaced. Most emplaced units are fixed in the April 1861 scenario.

Where the confusion really comes in, is that some units are fixed and static (usually militias created by event). So if I find some sort of GAMEY EXPLOIT :innocent: that unlocks fixed units, and use another gamey exploit to bounce all over the map unlocking those units, I will still be FRUSTRATED :p leure: when I get to those militia.

:D Burble & Regards,
JWK

Note: Both exploits have been brought to attention of AGEod, and fixed in the latest patch

Hi!
The fixed units inside the city need to be directly attacked (assaulted in this case) or damaged on siege to become unfixed (I mean the fixed until attacked kind of fixed/static) units.
For my experience it’s not enough to be besieged without experiencing any "siege hit" nor it's enough that one of your stacks out of the city gets attacked.
Take note that when the late happens on the battle report you will see all the units on the area, but your fixed militia inside the city will not fight.
You can even have several stacks on an area and all will appear on the battle report but it's possible that only some participate on the battle. You have to check losses/cohesion next turn to notice which one get engaged and which did not.
It can be confusing at first, but seem to be unavoidable because of a limitation on the battle report display. :p leure:

Hope it helps
Regards

PS: Like you, I used to put EMPHASIS on some words with caps, but from now on, I promise to use only bold font for that :innocent: :niark:

IIRC, some militia units have a zero movement but are not easy to identify as "fixed" (for example they do not show the locked icon). Many militia units that are raised in response to an enemy raid can not be moved. The tool tip does not list this characteristic, so you have to click on the unit and read it's details: movement coefficient = 0 (or something to that effect).

This is really annoying when you add them into a division and the damn division won't budge!

Those are static, but not fixed. The only immediate visual indication is the pulsing lock on the envelope, which is small and hard to spot.

If I notice these guys on the turn that they appear, I will immediately move them outside of the city, into the region. That way, they are unlocked by any enemy offensive action. If I miss one or two on that turn, then I have to consider whether the entrenchments they are creating are more valuable than the chance of unlocking. They are easy to miss, because they're not included in the 'E' & 'R' keys cycle.
