Divisions?

In my first Union campaign it seems I cant form Divisions. I have no problems forming corps and armies, but can't form divisions. There is no Division HQ to buy in the reinforcment poll. The manual says I need an HQ. I tried to form Divisions by clicking the "give division command" in the special orders but it does nothing.

I have the latest patch installed. I think I saw somewhere on the forum that since the game was patched there is no more divisional HQ, is that right?

Please clarify this whole division problem to me? :8o:

Thanks

I can't be very clear on this but maybe can help you a little bit it took me ages working out how to make divisions as well. Hard though to explain the workings.
First you highlight the leader and enable division command. Then using the ctrl key you highlight the units you want to place in the division you then hit the plus key or the recombine units button. Then you have your division. If you try to put in too many units or waggons I think the recombine units button greys out. Also I think that once a unit is enabled for division command it's name on the unit is written in Silver or grey although I'm not certain that's the meaning of this. Hope this helps and does not confuse even more.

Thanks Typhoon. Wow, it seems rather complicated in comparison forming corps and armies. Does what you just explained to me is in the manual?

The written manual coming with the hardcopy is outdated in regard to Divisions, there are no Div HQs anymore.

It's now exactly as tyhoon describes it. Just a few additions:

The leader whom You want to command the division must be activated (white envelope on the top right of the unit screen), otherwise the "form division" button will be grayed out. If You are only trying to reorganise existing divisions or detach brigades from them, activiation does NOT matter, but for forming NEW divisions, its a requirement.

There is also a caps for the maximum number of divisions that can be formed (48 for the Union, 24 for CSA) and in both 1861 campaigns this caps is initially much lower, but rises gradually to the maximum number until late summer 1861.

You're welcome. :)

BTW, an updated version of the manual (in PDF-format) can be downloaded here: http://www.ageod-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=105

Thanks Henry. Now that the divisions problem is solved, I will try to master the naval warfare in the game. So far, I moved some ships around without knowing what I am doing. Sent some in the Atlantic blocus box however it didnt increased the blockade level.

Well, that is a matter I don't fully understand myself, but as a basic rule it seems to be more efficient to blockade individual port by blocking all their entrance points or even better by conquering them with land units entirely. That can raise the blockade box efficiency dramatically. Having ships in the blockade boxes in offensive posture mainly helps catching and sinking confederate blockaderunners...

But, I'm not really much of an expert on naval warfare myself, so, please take that with a huge grain of salt... :sourcil:

send in more - it doesn't change per ship or small amount - you need to make a substantial investment to see a return

be sure to split somehow evenly your ships between the 2 blockades boxes.

What is the benefit of forming the units into Divisions? Also, can divisions then be combined into Corps?

Yes. Divisions lower the CP cost for forces.

Am I missing something, or do some one-star generals only allow combining with a single unit?

i.e some one-star generals can form a 'brigade, but not a division?

Thanks,

simovitch

No. One star generals only form divisions.

I'm wondering, is there benefit/s, if any, of grouping a one star general with another unit/s, other than forming divisions?

OK, I think I see what was happening - The one-star was inactive, but could still combine with a single unit to create a 'brigade', albeit with no apparent benifits for doing so.

If I have a division a little too large and it had a 5% or 10% penalty and I put it in Corps with a corps commander that has no penality, does the division 5% penality dissapear?

if you 'embed' a leader into a unit (division or brigade) you also get a slight combat bonus in battle from the leader offensive or defensive rating, so this is always a good thing to do that.

The penalty is at the stack level, so if you have a stack with a division, having 10% penalty and put the division into a corps (which is a stack), then the new penalty is shown and can be 0% if your corps commander is competent enough.
