River Boats

I can't seem to get around this annoying problem:

I order a new river ironclad (or gunboat, or whatever) from a state such as Illinois, and then it gets built in Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan, rendering it all but useless.

Obviously the easy workaround is to build boats in border states like Kentucky - but is there any way around this problem otherwise?

Isn't there a canal that can be used? I thought I saw this on another thread.

Yup, the Erie Canal. Simply order the ships to move to a spot on the Mississippi and they'll travers all the way down. Except in winter, when the canal (and parts of the Missisissippi) freezes.

Ah, OK. Thanks!

Actually, this doesn't work for me. If I try to send a boat to an East Coast port from Lake Michigan, it simply won't go - which makes sense to me at least in terms of the map itself. There isn't any clear waterway (on the map) that runs from Lake Michigan to the east coast, much less the Mississippi.

I have an armored frigate and a couple of river ironclads stuck up there because of this...

Yes, it`s a bug. Porter & his Ironclad shows up there sometimes as well.

The armoured frigate, USS Michigan, will never leave Lake Michigan (WAD). The river ironclads can be sent to Mississippi river via the Erie Canal as explained above. Also, if you are unlucky enough to ocean ships in Buffalo, NY, as sometimes happen, they will be stuck as well.

You can get the USS Michigan as far as Franklin, PA. Not much point, except maybe to shock some confederate deep raiders.

Okay - I'll try this with the river ironclads. For some reason I think I already had tried - looking at the map, the Erie canal isn't a "navigable river" all the way up to the top.

The building areas should have been fixed by now... so if you get a game where an ocean going ship is stuck, wrap the saved game and send it to me. I will need the turn when the ship was built too.
