i have been playing the april 61 campaign against the ai as the csa, aug 62 i moved 3 corps of the army of north virginia up to alexandra, while my left flank was held by another corps at winchester in prep to assault washington, unfortunatley my corps at winchester was soundly beaten and i was outflanked, i tried to retreat but was forced into a battle, i lost 31000 and my opponent lost 32000 in one battle !!! bloody hell, literally the ai took ages to process the battle, i have had to spend hundreds of thousands on replacements and my cause looks lost, was this scale of losses possible and has anyone fought a similar scale battle

I think Gettysburg had over 40,000 casualties so yours could have been possible if you had stubborn generals who didn't want to give up the fight. Sounds like your in a tough spot because I don't see how the CSA can lose that many men in one battle and live to fight too many more days.

I haven't had any battles that large myself, but I only started playing a few days ago. All I can say is good luck trying to recover from those losses.

Umm, check out my pics in this post. I still do not know why the AI decided to attack when it did, but it was a BAD choice.

the problem is not really the high amount of casualties - the problem is that entire units (brigades) are destroyed in open fielded battles and that those units are fighting until the last soldier drops dead. This has been reported and Pocus has an improvement in store for us.

I had one game where I moved 4 corps (as CSA) North and after a "nice" battle - 2 of my 4 corps where destroyed - down to the last bits and piece. IIRC only one infantry brigade, one artillery, one supply wagon and the generals survived the battle. This is off course not serious - but as I said Pocus is working on it.

I am surprised as well that artillery, services and supply wagons are the only survivors on a battlefield sometimes.

It seems to me if all other troops have been destroyed they should all be captured/destroyed themselves.

well that's the point - there's no sense in arguing that 90% of 2 corps are captured during battle - even more the game tells you how much captured troops there are after the battle.

Problem is the fact that the brigades are fighting until the last drop of blood is spilled. In reality a brigade or division would break down - starts to waver and finally rout and run like hell. You can capture some regiments - but not 2 entire corps. Neither do I think that they used Boshido code during ACW to commit Seppuku after defeat.

captured elements don't appears in the casualties list but as a tooltip over the 'captured units' icon.

No, what I meant was, I just won a bloody battle with Lyon in the West: The CSA couldn't surrender because I was assaulting a besieged town, so they fight to the last blood. I won, but the only men left in my army were almost only Arty, services and supply wagons, which is a bit odd.

PS: Don't get the impression I am moaning about the game, I am enjoying myself immensely, otherwise I wouldn't report here. :) But I feel compel to report issues or glitches (too many beta test under my belt probably :D ).

Apparently I am playing a different game or something because most of the time, I don't see very many units get destroyed. I see more units destroyed during the winter weather than in most of my summer campaigns. The only mass "extinction" I have seen was the 2 battles in my above link, and I am thinking that was a fluke.

As far as the arty and support getting out of a tight spot, I can see this happening. Most of the time these units would be in the rear, and would get a little bit of extra time over the gents on the frontline. So yeah I could see them routing if their lines where destroyed.

Ah OK, I see what you are saying now. Missed your last post, when I was posting myself.

It would be more odd for a battle in open terrain, but you besieged a town, assaulted it with the infantry and your arty, wagons and services kept to the rear.

Wow! Makes Burnside look like a genius. This game has a habit of laying waste to the best laid plans. Recently I had a Federal division mauled by partisans in Florida. What I get for playing in 'gator country'. :grr:
