I suppose you can only have so many stickies but I make sure I bump/update this every month or two for new players.

Quick amendment as I noticed I said army stacks will not initiate combat - this has been changed in a patch :-

An Army stack will initiate combat if it is the only stack in a region, otherwise it will only act to support a friendly stack.

While I think of it I will add another pearl of wisdom :-
Units attacking across a river will attack immediately ignoring the delayed commitment option.

Cheers, Chris

Brown Water Blockade
Type Off fire Def fire Initiative Range ROF Protect
Brig 4 4 8 6 3 0
Frigate 5 5 7 7 3 1
Steam Frigate 10 9 8 8 2 2
Monitor 14 10 7 7 2 11

Brigs are good for brown water blockades simply because blockade thresholds per sea area are in terms of "units," and a Brig is the cheapest combat unit available

Hasn't that changed? Blockade thresholds are now based on number of elements.

Yes, the rule changed but i think the tip is still applicable.
Brigs should be the cheapest type, unit by unit and also element by element...
I don't have the numbers right here but it would makes sense... :siffle:

Cheers!

This thread has not been responded to in 10 months. I know it doesn't need a bump because it's a sticky, but that old "last post" date makes it seem outdated, which it isn't. I just wanted to drop in and say thanks, Hobbes, for your quick guide. I found it to be a great first step for moving beyond the manual and into a deeper level of detail, and a great idea to try and condense the wisdom of the forum into a single easy document.

I concur with Major Tom. Being somewhat of a noob (had it approx 2 months) I found this thread and several others to be very helpful in trying to learn the game.......still learning but having fun at it.

Thanks for all the help Hobbes.

This classic thread is too important to stay "submerged". People who don't use Dixicrat's "link library" may not even know it exists! :(

So... I'm giving this thread a little "bump", so it'll float back to the top! :)
And if all my wishes come true, then maybe a certain English gentleman might even update it!

If anyone playing AACW ever feels like bringing this information up to date or reformatting please feel free to copy and paste and start a new thread.
Once that is done this one can be deleted. A lot of time has past since I put these notes together!

Chris

Just a question about these: some of those "stack" traits, can they be applied to a leader or are some from units, some from leaders? I'm wondering for a personal mod my co-conspirator and I are working on (putting ourselves into the game as leaders).

Hi Wraith, they can all be applied to leaders as far as I remember.

Chris

So much to read on these forums, but all masssively useful. Even stuff that isn't apparently up to date with the latest patch has helped me make sense of things. Thank you very much!
