There are some things about the brown water blockading of ports I just don't get. First off what is the blockade value of a naval element for? Does it matter at all? The sea zones say it requires 'x' number of units to blockade a zone, is a brig just as good as a frigate or ironclad or what? Another thing I have trouble with is figuring out which sea zones need to be blockaded in order to blockade a particular port. Is there an easy way to determine this? I really hope someone can help and I also hope I'm not being ridiculously stupid!

The blockade rating only comes into play when calculating the effectiveness of blue water blockades (in the boxes).

The tooltip over the port corner of a city tells you the sea areas adjacent to the port, and all those need to be properly blockaded for the port to be blockaded.
