Do they ever work? If they do work what is secret to doing that? Do certain
units do better than others, or groups instead of single units?

I haven't seen them do anything. Not that they could or couldn't be, but that I can't determine if they are successful. You have to get a unit in place, make a successful ambush roll, and then have a unit walk into the trap.
