Leaders??

I have a couple of questions;

1) When does the Union get to form Corps?

2) Why when an already established Division commander "unpacks" his units, i.e. spreads them out along the lower bar, for combining or removing unit, does the leader lose him capability to recreate that division? Specifically I had Mansfield out in the Valley and I unpacked him, already the 7th division, but then I was unable to recombine him into a division.

3) How do I replace and Army commander? Just fire him and appoint a new one? Do I lose my Corp attachment?

1.Both sides form Corps in early march 1862

2.If the leader could not form a division then it was because he was inactive that turn.

I had thought that once they had a division they could recombine it even if inactive but it may depend on your own game settings.

3.There are two way to give someone the army command. You fire the first and move the HQ to the other general or you can stack them together and transfer it but all your corps will need to be reactivated and if a leader is inactive that turn he must wait until he is active again to do so.

1) It's early March and no Corp choice. Does the leader have to be activated, white envelope?

2) I reloaded the save game and this is weird. Mansfield has a separate brigade that was not attached to him, so no division. I attached the "Mansfield brigade to him with no division button lit up, once attached I could then make a division or recombine his division.

3) So once created the Army HQ is a permanent unit. Weird you need to reconnect all the Corps to the new army commander's HQ. Seems once the connection is made it should not have to be remade.

Yes they need the white envelope to do anything like that. Armies, Corps, or Divisions.

I have never seen the division thing you talked about. If they have a brigade you have to drop it to form divisions when I have played.

I can’t check now as my game went out...so did the hard drive so I will not reload until I have the new HD. :bonk:

The Corps are connected to "X Army", meaning the Leader who has a HQ as part of his "portrait" - the connection is to the Leader, not the HQ unit. HQs act only as an ability activator, not as a unit that has Corps report to it.

Think of the Irish Bde, Longstreet's Bde at the start of April 61, etc. - you can't attach anything to these, because the regimental elements are fused with the Leader. One has to decompose the "portrait" to treat it as a Division that can mix 'n match elements. Same mechanism for Armies - it's McDowell's Army, really, not the Northeastern Army, etc.

The HQ list on the Roster is a convenience only. HQs do only one thing - enable a *** to form an Army.

As long as you don't turn off the division button, you can unpack and repack a division all you want. You also should be able to make a corps or army regardless of activation status. (maybe not if you have the "hard" activation rule, but I never use that one)

Yeah, that's what I think, too. I'd have to look up a recent AI game I'm playing with the frozen activation rule, but IIRC, I have seen resrictions on Div formation, but not Corps.

Another reason a division can't be formed is that you have a locked unit in the stack.

From time to time, my division formation buttons are inexplicably grayed out. When this happens I go to another stack, click on it, and then go back to the first stack. It usually then lets me create the division. Game hiccup, I guess.
