Supplying the Federal Navy?

I am getting messages that a ship in the gulf blockade box is out of supply. I can find nothing in the rules that addresses this. What do I do to keep the Union Navy in supply?

Would building a depot in Fort Pulaski or Jefferson work for the Gulf? But I have also had notices for ships along the Atlantic coast.

Sail them back to port, basically, or a supply source.

1. You can rotate Transports in and out to replenish their supply (transports will usually resupply themselves at sea -but not in the blockade boxes - if you have a bunch of transports in the Shipping Box), or
2. you can load a bunch of transports in the blockade box and keep the blockade ships thus supplied a long time, or
3. you can send transports to a port (preferably one that is a supply depot) to reload the supplies and then send them back. I suggest Ft. Pickens for the gulf. If you use it, build and place a naval engineer in there.

Ships just like land units require supply but it is only available when they are in port.

Transports are the sea going version of the supply wagon. They will provide supplies at sea.

The two methods Longshanks and GS discussed work as follows.

1. Rotating transports to the fleet: 1 to 3 transports go to the fleet, spend a full turn and return for more supplies. At which time you send another group of transports to the fleet.

This method keeps cohesion high and ships not damaged in combat can stay at sea indefinitely.

The number of transports is dependant on the number of ships in the blockade box.

2. Rotating ships to port to resupply. This method requires a larger number of ships but works much the same except the ships go to port for supply and repair. If your ships are losing cohesion you will have to send them back to port for one or more turns to regain it.

They will stay at sea for several turns but you have to keep a close eye on their supply.

When you get the message that a unit is unsupplied they have to get to port at once or you will lose the unit.

All good stuff. Ship supply, esp in the blockade boxes it seems, is esp bad in the Winter, as is ship movement.

If all this is too much of a pain, you can set the "ship settings" to 75% and it will reduce the mgmt issues quite a bit, but you also lose some of the positive effects, such as income and blockade effectiveness.

Even in winter Boston is a good option. It never seems to be more than 30 days where as others can be more.
