Gen. George Meade 31 Dec. 1815* - 26 Dec. 1863+

I've often heard the question asked, if generals higher up in command could be killed in battle. Personally I can't remember ever having lost a corp commander in battle though I've lost enough division and indirect commanders.

But this is the pinnacle of proof. Gen. George Meade, the commander of the best army fielded by the Union was killed while storming Fort Caswell, held by a one regiment garrison with a single 12lb pounder battery :p leure:

And to add insult to injury, the next turn a corp with 3 division attacked a partisan unit that had just appeared in a small city in a neighboring region, which resulted in division commander Reno being killed too :crying:

Maybe I should take up knitting

It's the "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance" syndrome :D

Oh, my God! My fellow citizen has died 9 years before than planned!!

It had to happen to the only USA general born in Cádiz! :grr: :D

That's not fair!! :p leure:

Regards :hat:

It wouldn't have been so bad if it had been a knock-down-drag-out fight vs a major army with thousands of losses on both sides, but ...

Knocking out those 3 stars is tough to do. Coincidentally, was he commanding a corps or army? I'm not sure if I've ever seen a corps commander die, but I've seen it happen to army commanders. I killed Irvin McDowell in the first battle of the game during a recent PBEM.

I have only lost divison commanders. Never Corps commanders or Army commanders. I think the more seniority a general has, the more difficult is to fall in combat.

Actually the probabilty is lower for 2* vs. 1*, and lower for 3* vs. 2* :D
Also, each leader can have a probability set.

For example in WIA:

A model param can be set for each leader:
CombatDeathChance = 40 // equals 40/10000 chance for 1* rank

Default is 20/10000 - 0.2%

Actually, I was referring to the rank, i.e. The general's stars. It was my mistake. I was wrong to say seniority. ;)

Thank you for your answers.

The army commander of course

Gray_Lensman wrote:I believe AACW only uses the default value of .2% since the parameter CombatDeathChance was never set to anything in the AACW Models database.

Thanks for that info Gray. My game just became a lot more exciting :coeurs: <-- This is an impending heart attack ;)

If I could have done that with McClellan, I'd have been set. I had to send him to Philadelphia in '62 to get his command radius away from his corps while the CSA was pushing on Washington, because he was giving them (already only 3-1-1 leaders) -1 and -2 to their strategic levels :bonk: I will never, ever, ever, ever, put him in command of anything again, ever.

Okay add Butler, Pope and Fremont to the list ;)

Halleck I can at least use to train militias and Banks and McClernand always land immediately upon their appearance in New York City and Chicago respectively to recruit conscripts.

I had the understanding that 3* Generals were impervious to death?

Or am I mistaken?

:-)

You are both correct and mistaken!

Early versions this was true, but this rule was changed a patch or two ago..... :D

You can do the same with Burnside (Recruiting Officer). ;)

...And with McClellan, Butler, Pope, Fremont and company I throw them into the trash!! :niark: :niark:

Hi all! :)

Thanks for the info, Gray. ;)

I agree with you. I also prefer the above.

In this respect, in the spanish forum of AACW we are discussing this in the last days. In fact, a member in a PBEM game, lost to Nat. Lyon just two days after the actual date of his death and in a place near Springfield, Missouri. It is amazing! :w00t:

I was actually wondering if Lyon did have a higher death chance as he seems to die more often in my games.

It would be great to have a historical death option or modified chance option. I don't really think death rates should go up after a generals historical death date though. I think it should be fairly uniform like it is now, but higher for generals known to lead from the front. If you wanted to do it with a minimum of work, you could just make it .2% for generals that survived the war and .4% or something for generals that died during the war.

I doubt this could be implemented before AACW2, so hopefully there will be more generals in the game and we could increase the death rates closer to a historical value. Only a handful of generals die in most of my games.

Much to my chagrin!

A good game though...

At the default rate of 0.2%, after only 50 battles the chance of at least one general dying has grown to 10% ( (1-0.002)^^50 ).

After 100 battles: 18%!
