Promoting Grierson causes him to lose abilities

I try to be very careful about promoting generals. Aside from irking other generals that I might want to get promoted later, some of them have the innate characteristic of dropping in quality. Some examples are Hooker, Lyon, and Burnside.
So when Brigadier Grierson 5-2-3 (+1 defensive through experience)
got his letter of approval for promotion I checked the handy Union Generals list to see what his status is. it says he starts at 5-2-2, can be promoted to Maj. Gen. 5-2-2, but not higher. So I jumped at the opportunity.
But after his promotion he has dropped in quality anyway.
I thought that generals keep their experience gains when being promoted, baring changes due to being promoted above their abilities as in the examples above.
Is this normal?

I made the same "discovery" lately and thought it was by design. Would be happy to have the input from development team.

I don't think they lose all of their experience. I found this out awile back and it seems like they lost around half their experience when promoted?

I'm not sure it was a conscious decision, but it does make sense. You're moving up in command, and while the experience gained as a division commander is helpful, leading multiple divisions is a whole new kettle of fish. It would make sense to have to lose at least a portion of your experience gains since your duties will be much different and more intensive.

Cleburne got it right. Promoted generals lose half their experience. I take it he had 10 experience when he was promoted, so he would now have 5.

I believe he was speaking about the loss of the experience bonus in this case, not so much the "Burnside Effect" here.

Yeah, I didn't realize that the experience point loss was the cause. I though it was more or less to keep track of when the next boost might take affect.
It could have been worst though. When I promoted Lyon thinking he would keep his 4 strategic rating (I'm playing with light general variations). He went from a 4-3-3 Maj.-Gen. to a 2-3-2 Lt.-Gen., making him almost useless to me now. I have no idea what I was thinking when I promoted him, because I know that at standard characteristics he goes from 5-2-2 to 4-2-2. Brain fart i guess
