Capturing light artillery

I am still relatively new with the game and in the first year of my first full campaign, playing as the CSA.(v1.15) I've noticed that in the battles that I've won, I've destroyed the enemy's light artillery. I'd MUCH rather capture it. Am I doing something wrong, or just not getting lucky rolls? Should I turn down the offensive orders to a more conservative attack or 'probe attack', rather than 'all out attack?' Would that make me more likely to capture them rather than destroy them? Is cavalry the unit that closes on them and runs them down? Should I use more of them in the attacks?

Mmm... i don't think in a big battle you can do much to improve your chances.
You must have to be lucky when you destroy or nearly destroy an enemy stack. Supply wagons are the most easily captured units, as they don't really fight in the battle.
The easiest way to get a nice free light gun unit would be to find some lone battery being translated to the front or a small stack that you can overcome with little combat.
But thats easier said than done

If the light artillery comes as part of a larger brigade, it can't be captured. Same with all other artillery.

i have captured brigade artillery before now(cant remember what type it was) but it was reduced to 10% strength(useless) so i added it to a garrison force(captured units not able to gain strength unless its a recapture).

I can never figure out what the hell to do with light artillery once I take it. I always wind up using them as garrison troops since they can't take replacements -- they're no good for use in fighting armies.
