Battle losses / NM

For once, I got an odd battle result.
In spite of basically even casualties (and the Rebs losing 32 guns, we none), this counts as a Reb victory. I can live with that, as Kearny had orders to attack conservatively and probably withdrew at some stage.
But we lost 1 element, the Rebs lost 19, and *we* lose 8 NM? I thought NM loss in battle was tied to elements destroyed? Shouldn't the Rebs have suffered the NM loss?

Also, unless I am much mistaken I actually gained those 8 NM. I had 105, I won 2 in another battle and I now got 115, difference +8, not -8. Is the text simply backwards?

Mmm... no idea... your gain can be because of some historical event you or the CSA has had
By the way, i see you got their Army HQ

Good shooting!

I thought of that, but wouldn't it have been mentioned in the news string?
Also, if I had really lost -8 in this battle, gained +2 in another, and ended up with +10 over the last turn, that event would have brought a staggering +16 NM! Too important to not have been mentioned in the log, don't you think?
Besides, doesn't it make sense? With this number elements destroyed, I should have had a NM gain, not loss. And it adds up too ...

Yes, its strange...
Its a PBEM?? maybe you can ask your rival.
And if playing against the Ai, you can load as the CSA and check what happened to them NM wise...

It used to be that whoever won the battle would always get the morale boost, even if they lost many many more forces. I've seen it go both ways in 1.15 though and I rarely check to see if the +/- sign is correct.

This happens sometimes in big battles with large losses and NM swings. Yes the message reporting the loss/gain is indeed incorrect. The NM points are awarded properly.
There are several other posts detailing this, I think one was in the Soundoff/Banks AAR, and I posted an example as well. I'll see if I can track those down.
Pocus even confirmed at one time that it was the report that was worded wrong and the engine was doing the NM right (as you saw).
Edit: Here is one link. Sounds like more info in the "Help Improve" topic as well:

Mmm... you may be right!
It seems the "Battle lost" message includes the "lost" word after the NM number, even if in rare case like this (the USA retreat but after killing a lot of CSA elements including a HQ) a "lost" battle can make you earn some NM
Probably it will happen also with the "Battle win" message.

This has to be one of the most reported quirks. I've seen something like 8 threads on this topic.

Winning a battle isn't tied to losses but retreat. The retreating side loses the battle whatever the loss ratio.

I have had this same situation too in my recent pbem game. As long as the NM seems to go to the deserving side, which it did for us, I'm not too worried about the report text.
