NM impact for taking/losing capital

I just lost a PBEM game in somewhat odd circumstances (I think). But perhaps not.

Here's what happened all within one 15 day turn. The USA took a poorly defended Richmond (I know, I know!!). But troops sent by the CSA retook the city. However, then more USA troops retook the city again.

First question: Is it possible to look in a log file and see the national morale gains/losses? I know the log shows the imact for battles, but I didn't see the impact for the USA taking and losing Richmond.

I want to do this because in looking at the USA morale gain, about 85, it seemed like they may have gotten the big boost twice while they didn't lose much when they lost the capital (i.e. + Big Boost for taking Richmond - Little Loss for Losing it + Big Boost for taking Richmond again = too much morale gained???)?

Also, when a capital is lost, shouldn't the capital have been moved? I know that it would have been moved at the end of the turn if the USA held it, but what if the CSA counter attack had managed to hold on? Does the game provide that entire 15 day turn to retake it in which case, it is only moved if still in enemy hands at the end of the turn?

Likewise, if it should have been moved after being taken the first time, then in reality the "second taking" shouldn't have been that high a morale loss. If that is the case, any chance the code to move it is at the end of the turn when it should be immediately upon loss?

I know that the Union does not lose much NM for loosing Richmond; however, I'm pretty sure that they can't gain the 50 (or however much it is) NM boost twice.

I don't know if there is anyway to view exactly how your or your opponent's NM reacted to loosing the city except for after the fact.

In regards to the capital, I think that if you loose your capital, you won't have one until you officially change your capital for $50,000 and NM loss. Also you can always retake your old capital and it will quickly function again like normal.

Is that true? I thought in games I've played that the capital is automatically moved for you if captured?

More details.

For fun, I just re-ran the turn. In the rerun, the CSA did NOT recapture Richmond.

As noted above, the capital was not automatically moved. Richmond remains the capital.

But also, the game wasn't over. The USA had gained about 45NM.

So I believe that confirms what I suspected. Losing Richmond, retaking it and losing again all within a single 15 day period results in close to a 2x morale boost for the USA.

If your capital is lost then you have to move it anyway otherwise you miss out on the War Resilience feature that can restore some of your NM. So you may as well move the capital when it is threatened. Also loosing Richmond while it is your capital would cause more NM than just the loss of Richmond the city.

Not possible by game design...

The NM would only be awarded once in a 15 day period, not multiple times as you suspect. The event processing doesn't happen that way on individual days during turn processing. The events (hence rewards/penalties) are only assessed after the entire 15 day processing period is over.

Yep. I actually had considered moving the capital, but I thought the forces getting close to attacking where out of supply. They had been surrounded and lost battles for about three straight months, so I'm not sure how they had any ammo :bonk: . I didn't move it because I didn't expect them be able to take Richmond and I thought New Orlenas was less defendable.

If you click on the text instead of the signature part when you choose to move your capital, you can choose to move your capital to Atlanta or somewhere else. I'm not sure what all the choises are. However, Atlanta is the natural choice.
