I know that this is a topic probably covered alot however as a new person to the game I wanted to know what the best Southern stategy is. I have heard others mention to build up your fortifications in key areas and wait for the Yankess to attack and defeat them or is it better to do a Stonewall Jackson strategy and hit them when they are divided before they can concentrate? Also what role does weather play in the game because many times strategies were devised on road conditions and weather and how the weather played itself out. I also note that the rivalries in the Southern armies more so than in the Yankee army also caused great problems with movement and strategy. Does this play a role in the game? Thanks in advance for any help.

Overall thought I definetly agree. I tend to like Jackson's school of thought. Get the enemy to spread itself out and then vigorously attack his seperate, smaller commands.

That's true, you need to be careful about it. Overextending your forces can and will be BAD.

Generally though, "Hit early, hit often" works out much better then sitting back and attempting to build a super-Maginot Line (and for largely the same reasons...)

I don't think you have to be overly aggressive early on. I go the Longstreet route and wait for the Union to make a mistake, i.e., attack understrength or get caught unsupplied somewhere, and then attack.

Although there are many ways to play as the Confederates in AACW, there is one undeniable fact- you will likely never have as great a chance to make progress as you will in the first year of the war (all things being equal). The Union will only grow in strength, and here is the kicker... you start with better organization and generals.

Combine this with the fact that in order to have more political capital (NM and VP) to spend on improving your position, you have to take objectives early, and you end up with a strategy that points towards taking the offensive when at all possible and keeping the Union guessing. As others have said, you do have to use caution though. Getting over-extended will only result in the acceleration of your defeat. The ultimate tightrope to walk, if you will.

I guess that is why so many here enjoy playing as the CSA; it's quite a challenge to last as long as you can against the growing might of the Union.
