What is a "hit"

I was just wondering what exactly one hit is. Like when you take a hit from retreating or from bad weather. I'm sure this question has been answered before, but hit is such a general term, it's hard to find
Much appreciated

That means you have taken damage. Each of your units have a certain number of hits (or hit points if you prefer). Damage reduces the hit points. The game engine says you take hits for climate damage (read winter blizzards).

Hi!
Check the Unit detail panel (
clicking on any element icon) and you will see how many hits that elements has (each little men figure=hit).
It depends of the type of unit, but for an infantry element in AACW its usually 20 hits per element. So, speaking in men its like 30 men/hit for a full strengh 600 men regiment.
Ships, guns and other kind of units have different numbers of hits.
Bear in mind that hits is the "real thing", what the game uses on combat calculations.
Numbers of men/guns/horses are just some flavour added over the hits so the battles results are more inmersive and interesting.
Cheers

To be more precise, most infantry in AACW have 20 hits, militia have 15 hits, and small units like sharpshooters have 10 hits. It's generally 30 men/hit, except for sharpshooters which is 10 men/hit. (flavor numbers of course).

Thanks everyone, that is exactly what I was looking for.
Artillery hits

One more comment.

Most units in the game inflict one hit of damage, when they achieve a hit.
However, (most) artillery units inflicts
two hits of damage, each time that a hit is achieved. And during assaults, some artillery units inflict
three hits, for each successful hit!
"Multiple hits" is one of the many reasons why Artillery is so important: it's hit chances are usually notably better than Line units,
and each of those hits inflicts at least two hits of damage.

I know the rules are a bit out-dated but they say that artillery and other support elements don't participate in melee combat.

You're correct. Artillery doesn't participate in
offensive assaults. However, when artillery is
defending against an assault... it defends quite well.
12 lbrs have a base 70%* hit chance per round of assault, and deal out a whopping 4 hits of damage!
(...or

, depending upon which side you're on.)

*With a ROF of 2 per round, that's 91% for one hit group, and 49% for two hit groups... or 8 "hits". Whew.
