A quick question regarding the level of entrenchment of a stack as indicated by the base of the unit icon on the map, if I may. I have several times seen it mentioned that as soon as a cannon is sticking out from the base of the icon, that means level 5 or above. But that does not seem to match with what I am seeing in my current game. I have seen Bobby Lee retreat from Jackson to Meridian two turns ago and now that I get there I see him sitting on top of palisades and a cannon which seems to indicate a really high level of entrenchment, like 7 or 8? Granted, he might have merged with a tiny militia unit already sitting there and digging since Spring 1861. But one of my own corps is also showing a base with a cannon, yet its entrenchment level is clearly only 2, as indicated by the number on the zig-zag line icon top right of the unit display at the bottom of the screen.
In another context I have seen it mentioned that the cannon in the icon base means, well, simply that cannon are present and enjoying the entrenchment level corresponding to the remainder of the icon base. But that does not automatically make the entrenchment level 5 or higher, or does it? My impression so far was that entrenchment levels are gained consecutively over time, not jumping to 5 just because cannon are there.
Anyone care to enlighten this confused newbie? Thanks.
