Forts and Raids

Sun Aug 26, 2007 2:45 am

I am playing a game as CSA, and have a couple unrelated questions.....

1. FORTS: Are they worth building? 2 Wagons and 4 Cannon is ALOT of resources, so it better be good. I am thinking one in Richmond might be worth it, not sure of any other more worthy places, maybe Vicksburg later on. But I would love to know if they actually have a big impact or not.

2. RAIDS: You get reaction forces for Enemy Raids. How many times does that trigger, just once in the game, or every time a Raider comes into the state? For example, a raid into Tennessee triggered reinforcements. Tennessee is clear of Yankees at the moment, will more Cav trigger MORE goodies? What form do the Freebies usually take, I have seen Cav, Artillery, Militia....

Against PBEM, deep raids are pretty risky, and often one-way trips. If he's getting free units on top of it, I might really think twice. I have to keep trying just to keep him honest and setting up garrisons.

raiding is next to useless unless you capture a depot
in a fight vs AI you dont need to raid anyway, you ll beat the AI anyway

in a fight vs human opponents, the opponent will be clever enough to defend his depots and you trigger his "freebie" cavalry, otherwise you just destroy his railways but therefore i'd use partisans.

raiding might become interesting if you have a stack with enough punch (think of a corps for Forrest) to take poorly defended towns/depots and spread some havoc in the backgarden of your enemy.

The reaction is variable.

Against a 1+ element raid, you get..

1 Cavalry Regiment

Against a 2+ element raid (2 or more enemy cavalry in your state)

2 Militia Regiment
1 Cavalry Regiment
1 Artillery Battery

1 element raids will cause your opponent to get the fewest reaction forces. Large, corps sized raids will just cause your opponent to get more forces (you get options 1 and 2, so 2 militia, 2 cavalry, 1 artillery!).

These events happen only once.

The 'cost' gain by the defender is impressive, as building this force would probably equate to a 'regular' brigade being built to get what these events give you.

Interesting, so.....

Can you trigger EACH event once, or just one of them? In other words, maybe you think that eventually, you'll trigger a raid no matter what. So, send ONE unit first, to knock off the event, then send multiplies? Or do you get EACH one once?

Also, any opinions on FORTS?

Each one once, if they send in 1 unit, it will just activate 1 event. If they send in 2+ units, it will activate both (or just the second if the first has already been activated).

No, there aren't any gamey ways to abuse the system in regards to this.

Regarding forts, yes they are worth while, especially when you near the unit cap of your artillery and/or supply. Think of this as a way to boost the power of a command, or critical position, without worrying about command penalties, etc.
