From Memphis to Vicksburg?

Fri Jul 06, 2007 5:57 am

How should the Union player move from Memphis to Vicksburg? I fear that floating down the Mississippi and landing amphibiously will put me out of reach of my supply network, which has a maximum range of five regions, as I recall. There aren't any CSA forts or fleets in my path, as near as I can tell, but the banks of the Mississippi are "red supply" on both sides. Can I use the river as a supply line in this circumstance, or should I focus on a closer target first? Or do I have to march down one or both sides of the river before surfing down it?

Alternatively, will it work to supply a beachhead in Vicksburg from New Orleans, if I invade that amphibiously (by sea, not river) first?

Many thanks in advance! I'm having a blast with this game.

One unrelated question. A turn after I made Grant the Commander of the Army of the Southwest, I lost Victory Points because David Farragut was unhappy at being passed over. Er, do I have to make him Commander of the Navy or something before I can install Grant? I think he complained earlier when I promoted someone else to three-stars too, but I could be wrong about that.

Farragut? Sounds like a bug.

Was Farragut unhappy because you made Grant an army commander or because you didn't promote Farragut to three-star rank when he was eligible?

Very strange, Farragut should not care about Grant. Do you still have the save around (specify the turn please). Send it to support@ageod.com please.

edit after Pasternasksi message: you get no message in this case.

Well, I thought so, but, as you say, Farragut should not care about Grant in any circumstances.

Ooooh, looky me. I got promoted back up to colonel. Be careful. I might wind up in charge of something, and, as my poor wife knew so well, disaster soon follows then...

I'll look for a savegame; I think I made one at the time it happened. It was after Grant became Army Commander -- quite late in the game, thanks to my newbie bumbling. Here's a screenshot of Farragut getting angry:

After this incident, I promoted to Farragut to Admiral in early December 1863, to try to prevent this sort of thing from happening again; I hope I didn't inadvertently make things worse! I've just built an Army HQ to um give him some sort of Army Command so that he doesn't complain:

Incidentally, while I've wandered so far off my original topic, here's one more recent thing that confused me. The 1864 victory conditions mentioned in this election-event tooltip don't match those on the victory screen, which now tell me I need 225 NM to win:

Also, note that "morale" is missing an "e" in this tooltip.

Finally, can anyone offer advice on my original question? Will the Mississippi river supply me even if there is "red" (enemy-controlled) supply zones on both sides of the river for a certain distance, assuming no intervening forts or fleets?

I just remembered one key fact: Grant may well have been aboard a transport (heading south on the Mississippi) when I made him Army Commander. In that guise, he does appear like the commander of a fleet, doesn't he? It's his face that I see as he rides around in his boat. Maybe the answer is: don't promote a general who is riding in a ship?

EDIT: savegames sent.

The first language of AGEOD is French, which may result in different spelling of some words. To me, it is like reading 'American' spelling where all of the "u's" are left out.

The tooltip is wrong (and have a typo!) and will be changed.

Saved game received, thanks Grotius. I will look at it monday.

No Grant, should still be considered a general, not an admiral.

If the river is not blocked by an enemy ship, if none of the land regions adjacent to it have emplaced guns, supply will pass... be sure to have a depot though and have at least level 2/3 or 3/3 in riverine pool.
