Forward to Richmond! Event

Wed Apr 25, 2007 2:55 am

I think that was the name of the event. Basically, it tells you that if you, as the Union, do not advance into Virginia within two turns, you lose 10 NM.

Well, when I got this event, I already had two big forces in Va, at Alexandria and Harpers Ferry. But I thought maybe the event meant I had to push farther south, as it was too easy as is. So, I took Manassas (it was practically undefended, the CSA AI had decided to pull Beauregard further south), and praise was heaped on McDowell, Hunter and company for stomping the poor Va militia left holding Manassas.

But, two turns later I got the message that the drive was a failure, and the public was disgusted at me (-10 NW).

So, just out of curousity, for future reference, what does the Forward to Richmond! event demand of a player? Actually to take Richmond maybe???

In fact, forward to Richmond is really...to Richmond...! I probably need to write a bit more precision in the tooltip or event text.

The trigger area is the region of Richmond, VA and/or any one adjacent region, so Manassas and Fredriksburg for instance do not qualify, you have to go much closer to the Rebs' capital :indien:

The premise of the actual call was the desire by the Northern newspapers and public to ensure that the first Confederate Congress was not able to meet in Richmond. Sort of like Lincoln's breaking up of the Maryland legislature on a much larger scale. You've got to be able to disrupt it, so you've got to be pretty durn close to maybe drop a few shells on their rebellious heads. :)

Yep...thought the same, i.e., if I made a good showing at Manassas as the Union then would avoid the -10 NM hit.

Yes this makes sense. Richmond or adjacent to!

You know, if this event were to also remove McDowell (or the current commander of the AoP) upon failure as well, this would improve the McClellan events. Then the player would face a choice...recreate AoP with the now ranking *** McC in change, or re-appoint McDowell or another *** at a HUGE penalty (for leapfrogging the very political McC).

Because right now, I just sort of ignore the McC events. The Overcautious is such a devastatingly bad trait that McDowell (or anyone) works out to be a better choice as army commander, IMO. That McC's organizational and training traits do not come close to redeeming.

Great thinking and great idea :coeurs:
Forrest said something about killing a Yankee for each of his horses that they shot. In the last days of the war, Forrest had killed 30 of the enemy and had 30 horses shot from under him. In a brief but savage conflict, a Yankee soldier "saw glory for himself" with an opportunity to kill the famous Confederate General... Forrest killed the fellow. Making 31 Yankees personally killed, and 30 horses lost...

He remarked, "I ended the war a horse ahead."
