Range of support units

I see that leaders have a range of 1, while support units have a range of 2, including medical units, is that because of some game mechanics?

So, if the range of support units is reduced to 1 that would not produce undesirable secondary effects, right? The range of 1 seems adecuate to represent personal weapons, like pistols. Then range 2 could be reserved for smoothbore muskets (currently 3) and range 4 for rifled muskets, enhancing the difference between the 2.
