Saved Games

Thu May 03, 2007 2:06 am

Could someone please explain the saved games files. Why are there two entries for each saved turn ?? Need I scroll through all those previous saves to get to the last one ?? What is the significance of the red printing and the paper clip ?? What does the AI click option (top button) do ?? ; nothing seems to happen when you click it. This part of the game is hardly intuitive.

Enjoying the game immensely so far.

Thanks.

When a game is saved, you get four files. Two of the files are turn files. One each for the Union and Confederacy. One of the files is a master history file and the last file is the player's order file.

When you click on the "ai" tab in the load screen, it allows you to load the game from the ai's point of view. I often do this for organizational purposes. Every 5-6 turns, I open the game from the ai perspective and make organizational changes in their armies making leaner, meaner, and more effective ai fighting forces.

Hi Johnnie,

if you start a new game, AACW will create automatically a new savegame file (actually two: One for every side). If you end a turn the game is saved again. A backup from the old save will be created, afterwards the old save will be overwritten. So it doesn't matter how many turns you played, you will only see two files in the load menu: Your side and the AI side. You can restore the older saves by hovering with the mouse over the entry in the load menue and follow the instructions in the tooltip.
If you see a lot of files in the load menu: These are saved games from other campaigns you started. Every time you start a new campaign/scenario, also if it is the same one, a new save (and thus a new entry in the list of saved games) will be created. So it may be useful to delete the old games once in a while.

Well...

The way it's set-up right now makes doing AAR's a nightmare. Having done a number of AAR's for other games, being able to have saves available to go back and forth, for screen shots and reference, is a definate must. I realize that one can "pick out" the saves, but it is cumbersome and I worry that I will somehow screw things up and overwrite my files.

If I had my preference I would want a more traditional setup featuring an autosave and a "saved game" feature for important points in the campaign.

The company choose to have a directory that is based on the different scenarios. This does not suit my own preferences because I don't play different scenarios simultaneously, but stick to one and play it out to the end.

Still, the system works fine for game play.... and the bottom line is that is what is important.

Korrigan,
Can you add something to the FAQ about how the Save system works?
Here is an example using Primasprit's post as a guide. It may not be complete as I didn't have time to finish.

How does the Save Game system work?:
-The "Load Game Menu" will display one savegame file set per campaign or scenario.
There will be a player file and an AI file. The files displayed will be from the last save made.
-The paperclip symbol represents a player mid-turn save or a restored backup**is this correct? :siffle:
-All saved game files are stored in the "Saves" folder. (default path: C:\Program Files\AGEod's American Civil War\ACW\Saves)
-For every new campaign or scenario started, AACW will automatically create a new savegame file folder within the "Saves" folder.
The new folder will have the same name as the campaign or scenario (ex: 1861 April Campaign, 1861 April Campaign01).
-When you end a turn, a savegame file set is automatically created within it's folder.
-All subsequent saves in that campaign or scenario will be stored in this folder.
-Every savegame file set consists of 4 files: 1 USA turn file and 1 CSA turn file (.trn); 1 master host file (.hst); 1 players orders file (.ord)
Example: 1861 April Campaign~USA.trn (USA turn file); 1861 April Campaign~CSA.trn (CSA turn file); 1861 April Campaign.hst (master file); a file with .ord (your orders file)
-A backup folder of the previous savegame file set will be created everytime you end a turn or manualy save the game.
It will be named "Backup1", "Backup2", Backup14" and so on.

How to Copy or Rename a saved game from within the game
(Of course you can do this manually from Windows also)
Following these steps will create an entirely new savegame folder set.
-You must be on the Main Map screen
-Hover the mouse over the Save Game icon, upper right corner, center icon, under the date.
-Follow the tooltip instructions. <Ctrl> + click the Save Game icon
-A "Rename this saved game to" box will open. Enter the desired name.
-Every subsequent save of this scenario or campaign wll be saved under this new savegame folder.

How to Restore old saves from the Main Menu Caution!!: this will delete the previous save!!. Make a copy of the previous savegame file set!
-Open the Main Menu-Load Game screen
-Hover the mouse over the save file you wish to restore.
-Follow the tool-tip instructions. "Hit <Home> to restore the previous turn"
-This will automatically delete the last savegame file set and restore the previous "Backup" folder savegame file set.

How to Restore old saves from Windows
-Navigate to the "Saves" folder. (default path: C:\Program Files\AGEod's American Civil War\ACW\Saves)
-Open the folder for the campaign or scenario you want to restore.
-There should be a few "Backup" folders. The highest numbered folder is the last backup.
-The 4 files not in a backup folder are the current savegame set. (Make a copy of these files if you wish)
Example: 1861 April Campaign~USA.trn (USA turn file); 1861 April Campaign~CSA.trn (CSA turn file); 1861 April Campaign.hst (master file); a file with .ord (your orders file)
-Copy and paste the contents of the desired Backup folder to overwrite these 4 files. This will replace the old save with the backup save.

I may be wrong, but it seems if you have a paper clip icon on a saved, that indicates you saved during the planning phase of a turn.

I changed it.
Please let me know what the exact wording should be.

you have 5 files, not 4 in the end, because the AI will also generates a .ORD file.

Rename is done within the main menu. Copy is done as described.

So, I can't find anything in the Saved folder, but the game shows saved games (so many that is's slowing my game down when I'm trying to get to the load screen). Is there anyway to find them/fix this?

Yes, yes I do. Does that mean it's incurable?

No, it just means that Vista in its wisdom chooses to place your saved games where it wants to. Use explore to find the AACW files. When you open AACW you will notice 'compatibility files' in the blue bar at the top. Your saved games are in there. It is much easier to delete unwanted saves from here than from the game.
