Ouch. On the initial Union retreat it probably happened because I believe six units routing cause everything to route. I've had that burn me a couple times when my low cohesion units routed despite having a numerical advantage.

well...those results go to show that math does help, but it can't prepare you for something like that up above. At first I was trying to calculate everything, but then it just turned into "send this corps here and this corps here *crosses fingers*" and math went out the window.

If I had used math, I probably wouldn't have counterattacked Grant's army and Sherman's corp, because my army was technically "combat incapable" and incapacitated logistically. But I was in a bloody rage and it appears that sheer willpower wins the day in some cases. Fortune favors the bold eh?

Just goes to show that you should never attack at all costs unless the objective decides the outcome of a theater in the short or long term with more emphasis on the short term because it would cause, in my case, irreplacable casualties. I've only used it in symbolic objectives and important objectives if they need to be taken quickly. Otherwise the entire situation can go Cold Harbor on you :( .

It certainly looks like keeping the pressure up was the right move. The skirmishes at places like Stark and St Joseph helped whittle down the opposition, and break up supply lines. Grant and friends were so busy keeping you busy, they never had time for rest or resupply either. They were the ones operating in hostile territory. Job well done - Congratulations!

Thanks Jabberwock, you've been a great help these past few posts! My PBEM game was put on hold though for around a week or so, opponent is still learning how to beat me in this same scenario, while I'm at his house! I just hope he does better than I did as the Union...I'll never cross rivers the same way again. It turned out that Grant was no "Little Mac" when it came to retreating across rivers :bonk:

Cheers :mdr:
