Can anyone recommend some quality fiction speculating on how North American history might have played out if the south had won? Philip K Dick had an interesting novel, called "Man in the High Castle" or something like that speculating on what life in what was the US could have been like if the Axis had won.

Not too interested in "what if" fiction about the Civil War itself - especially if AK-47s are involved! That's what AACW is for

Indeed that's the "Man in the high Castle", a wonderful one ( like Ubik or A scanner darkly). Philip Roth's "The plot against America, superbly written.

IMHO the MacKinlay Kantor 'If the South had won the Civil War' is an excellent read.

Harry Turtledove wrote a huge series on this theme. The US joins the central powers in WWI, while the CSA stays allied with Britain and France.

CSA conquered Latin America and became superpower.
The book itself is about life of Northerner in post-war USA.

I'd be interested in an alternate-history investigating what might have happened had Reconstruction been carried out more aggressively. Might the US have avoided a century of poisoned race relations and decades of civil rights struggles? Could we have had our first black president not in 2009 but 1909? (And in 1909 he probably would have been a Republican :thumbsup Or maybe a harsher Reconstruction could have divided the country permanently and caused white southerners to feel a persecuted minority (even more than they do now) for a century or more?

I especially like the expressions on my friends' faces after making them read Ubik (it looks like or :bonk .

My other favourites are Deus Irae and Martian Time Slip. Both are excellent.
