The Declaration of Independence is the document in which the Thirteen Colonies in North America declared themselves independent of the Kingdom of Great Britain and explained their justifications for doing so. There are several stories associated with the signing of the Declaration of Indepndence. John Hancock, as President of the Continental Congress, was the first to sign. As you can see, his signature is quite bold. At the time he is said to have remarked that he wrote his signature large enough so that King George III could read it without need for his reading glasses.

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, 'Now we must all hang together or we shall surely all be hanged seperately'.
