Ageod Middle Earth?

Tue Jan 23, 2018 7:37 pm

As a big Tolkien fan I must ask if Ageod would ever go fantasy into middle earth. Or, is that something modders would be able to do [edit map etc] if they had the interest?

"Christopher Tolkien, son and literary heir of J.R.R. Tolkien, resigned from the Tolkien Estate. And his departure changes everything.....With Christopher’s departure as an officer of the Tolkien Estate (which was incorporated in 2011), the long-awaited “rights frenzy” for Tolkien properties may soon begin,”

ummm thanks, I think....

So, here's the thing Divide and Conquer is not the... thingy, sub-mod of a sub-mod  that turns Total War into a LotR game, the Third Age: Total War mod does that by modding Medieval II: Total War :bonk: specifically "the Kingdoms expansion of the Medieval 2: Total War game" (why am I learning all this... stuff  ).

Sind the Third Age: Total War mod can be downloaded for free from moddb.com, and because I haven't found anything contradictory information, I have to assume that TATW is a free, player created mod.

FAQ from the site:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthre ... -Questions
General Questions and Informations about the Mod
Q: What is Third Age: Total War ?
A: TATW is a total conversion mod that merges the fantasy world of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth with the gameplay of a Total War game.

Q: Precisely what game is this mod for ?
A: It is for the Kingdoms expansion of the Medieval 2: Total War game.

Q: Where can I download the latest version and what do I need to download ?
A: You do only need to download the new Version 3.0 (Part 1 and Part2). Afterwards download the 3.1 patch, the 3.2 patch and install all, done.
You can find all files here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war/downloads

Q: Do I need to install all of the Kingdoms campaigns in order to run TATW ?
A: No, one is enough. Whichever one you like.

Q: Do I need to patch Kingdoms in order to run TATW ?
A: Simply installing Kingdoms is enough though it is advisable to update it to the 1.5 version. Found here.

Q: Can I still play the original M2:TW or other mods after installing TATW ?
A: Yes, TATW is completely mod-foldered and will not interfere with the original game or other mods (one single file will be in the original game folder, but it won't affect the original game in any way)

Q: How can I install submods and/or play with different versions ?
A: You can, there is a usefull guide here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=528275

I assume that since it is a fan-project, that neither the book owner, nor the film owner are interested in persecuting the makers of this mod. It is basically free advertisement for them, and there is no money to be had from the modders.

Were AGEod or Slitherine or Matrix Game to try the same thing (but for money) I think you could be assured there would be a legal response.

Yes the story is complicated.
Third Age 3.2 is a discontinued mod for the old Medieval2TotalWar-Kingdoms.
4.9 Alternative Patch (it has started with 4.0, to follow on 3.2), a mod for TA, is an unofficial continuation.
Divide and Conquer 2.1 integrated at least the 4.4 version of the Alternative Patch. ThirdAge was already very good, DaC2.1 is amazing (2.2 coming in 2 months).

None TotalWar game post-Med2Kingdoms (i.e. none Steam-only TotalWar games) was made to be fully modable (DLCs to be sold..), so old Med2TW is still the best to do serious mods. We're waiting for at last a so Medieval 3, but there should be no hope with Sega.

Sure, who makes a Tolkien full mod for the AGE engine would not be able to sell it.

That would be a major task, but there is no technical obstacle to 'total convert' one of the AGEOD game into a Middle Earth one. I would suggest starting either with NGC or CW2? :dada:

Game Suggestion- Field of Glory Lord of the Rings
Edit Report this post Quote
Post by TolkienRJJ » 25 Jun 2019 21:12

I suggest a Lord of the Rings for field of glories next game. Tolkien carries the largest fantasy fan base of all time only expanded by the movies. Amazon will be doing a 5 season show [250 million] to start in 2020 or 2021. And universal is rumored to open a Lord of the Rings Theme park in 2023. All of these will increase interest in all things Tolkien.

Lord of the Rings is the best selling fantasy book of all time. The Hobbit is the third best fantasy seller. Besides the Bible, LOTR is the third best selling book of all time, the Hobbit is 8th on the all time list.

The world created by Tolkien would fit perfect for the next game.

- Large fan base already present
- Multiple diverse factions with both challenges and bonuses for each
- Hugh map of Middle Earth with diverse terrain and battle maps
- Large numbers of diverse units and forces for epic battles
- Large castles for epic siege battles
- Hero's of legend with special abilities
-Agents, spies, assassins, diplomats etc
- Battle over land, sea and air
- Economy and trade
-Exspansions and DLC could be done on the first and second ages

Middel earth enterprises gives out the rights to various gaming formats [board games cpu games etc] here is a list of the rights so far given out.

It also seems some have made LOTR themed games but not officially licensed
