Well whats the best game you have ever played?

I will start this off my favorite game of all time is Ultima 7 one of the first true 'Sandbox' games ever made. The world was so dynamic. Well Ageod Community what is your favorite game?

This is really a tough question as there are many great games. If i have to pick one:

Master of Orion

- good empire management tool
- diplomacy that made sense
- best spying/espionnage system in any game
- Great Space battles
- Varied victory conditions.

I think that the game I have played most of my life has been Championship/Football Manager (a slight name change during all these years)... I have been playing that game for more than a decade already... and still playing every new version they release.

For longevity I would have to say The Campaign Series. Over 10 years and still playing PBEM.

Very hard to say.
Maybe Knights Of The Old Republic, the first time I played it.
AACW isn't too far. As Star Wars Rebellion was, at the time.

I played for hundreds of hours Stars! and to a lesser extent Dominions, mostly in PBEM. Good memories of these games...

Colonization [the original DOS-based or it's first Windows version]

But sorry, I am unable to give a simple answer
First, what defines a great game ? To me it is essentially the result of two principal factors: cheer pleasure (including immersiveness) and time spent with the game. Other factors are important, as game design, support, etc.
I have been playing computer games for more than 25 years now, starting with the ZX Spectrum . Back then I had time to immerse myself and now that factor of the equation is severely limited by RL factors, which is an unavoidable bias.
Some games that over the years are in my hall of fame and gave me great joy (more or less chronologically)
- Desert rats and Elite on the Spectrum
- The first Civilization
- Sid Meier's Gettysburg
- The original Europa Universalis
- Baldurs Gate
- Shogun and Rome Total War
- Neverwinter Nights (the first one)
- Galciv 2
- Take Command 2nd Manassas (love this game !)
- Of course my beloved AACW

But with some hindsight probably the best game I ever played was...Lords of Midnight by Mike Singleton on the Spectrum. Amazing how with 48K it was possible to make a truly epic game, mixing admirably RPG and strategy, even with "3d" graphics. It was the game that forever hooked me to electronic entertainment. And I still feel that we have not yet achieved the amazing promisses that that jewel showed me would be possible.

I can't remember many of the names of the things I played back on the old Vic-20, but that was pretty mind blowing at the time.

Pre-Pentium:
Railroad Tycoon - Still play this one
Civilization 1 - Classic
Mechwarrior - I can still remember the bar music to this day, and since it was on the internal speaker, I always had a pillow handy when I was playing at night.
War In Russia - First real large wargame I ever played. I printed out maps and laminated them and would spend literally hours a day plotting my moves.
Pool of Radiance - Never really played tabletop D&D, the computer made it interesting.
Command HQ - Still play this one too, the original RTS.
The original A-10 flight sim, can't recall the name now, back before Falcon came out. Strafing tanks was simply too much fun.

Post-Pentium:
AACW - Only the second game I've ever tested for, and the only one that managed to hold my interest and even make me want to try to mod.
Civilization 4 - One of the best updated games ever in my opinion
IL2 - One of the few flight sims that actually held my interest, and made me want to play.
Combat Mission - The original is still the best. B to B might have had more toys, but I still prefer the original.

Those would be the top ones, that I would still happily pick up and play because I loved them so much. There are plenty more I still enjoy, but these take the cake.

Franciscus, that really takes me back! Lords of Midnight was a great game - one I remember very fondly.



I remember keeping out the evil hordes in the narrow passage to the south before moving out to conquer the realm! All the time you had the small expeditions of the heroes trying to get the artifacts that might help the cause (or was that Doomdark's Revenge?)

Luxor the Moonprince, Rorthron the Wise, Corleth the Fey, and Morkin - amazed there are so many websites that mention this now - I'm sure I looked for this a couple of years ago and found nothing.

Really liked Master of Orion 1, XCOM UFO Defense and Shogun Total War...always got a kick out of the fellow saying "Buddha's compassion go with you" as they were plotting your demise .

Oh my what a list, this takes me back to my college days. I loved all of them and spent way too many hours in the old computer lab on all of those games. Maybe that's why my grades suffered so.

BTW - I think the A-10 game was A-10 Tank Killer.

That was it...I knew it was A-10 something, figures it would be the most logical name that I blanked on.

I loved that game... I remember I played it while hearing Metallica (the black album) back in those days...

I had much pleasure with these games :

*Panzer General and Fantasy General, the best ones of this long saga.
*Age of Empire, it opened a new sort of "kingdom sim" RTS games.
*Medal of Honor, it was my fisrt experience of a FPS, cool.
*The great Master of Orion 2.
And a special award for Stars!, still playing it...Pocus, do you remenber the game based on Empire of the Fading Suns ? exhilarating !

It's a 4x space strategy game like Master of Orion & Galactic Civilization. One of the classics...a sequel was planned but unfortunately, the company went bankrupt because they couldn't find a publisher...shame

It is no exaggeration to say that Stars! was the best game ever made.

heaps of different species with different traits and tolerances
There was a competent AI too
bug free/ crash free
average graphics

unfortunately it was released at least 12 years ago and I couldn't get it to run on a modern computer!

Early PC
North & South from Infogrames was my first addictive game for PC
Panzer General (the original one)
Civilization 1 and 2
Colonization
Master of Orion (had HUGE fun with custom disign of ships and arming my army, something that I am REALLY missing in the modern wargames)
Wolfenstein 3D (the original one which was a true gem for its period)
LucasArts flight "simulations (Battlehawks 1942 , Battle for Britain and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe)

Late PC
Sudden Strike and its followers
Total War series - played most of them, but most of them lacked and still lack something
The Operational Art of War
Footbal Manager series from SI Games as THE most addictive games ever made
AACW, WiA, NPC from AGEOD
Call of Duty series for a few hours of single player fun
EA Sports NHL series (see the note for Total War above )

I still play it on my 5 years old computer (P4 3GHz, Windows XP 32 bits) without problem. But on my brand new one, with Vista...well, it's a different matter.

What is the problem, are you using Vista/W7 x64?

Required several things, including a change in the bios to run it, but was it really so good?

oh...sentimentally rememberd times of amiga - doofus, second samurai, (already mentioned) double dragon and many which names i dont remember
(from these days its also need to remember consoles - loved street fighter, super mario, ninja turtles)

Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Pirates, Colonization...

This is a trip down memory lane! A few screenshots from games I used to love below. Amazing how the graphics look - I always remember them as if they had fairly modern looking graphics.

Thanks guys for the tips on Stars! I'll have to give it a go. Such a good game off the playing list because of technology advances. My computer is two years old in Feb 2010. I don't have a floppy disc drive!!! I'll go get one.
