I think this is, by far, the most interesting and original feature.
Now, although more realistic, it should also be playable and rejoicing.

Wow!!! I can only imagine what can be the feelings of JMM right now. At least his baby is born, after so many years of efforts.

Well, some preliminary thoughts - more from the demos than from the full game - this is not for the "casual" strategy gamer, although several levels of complexity exist.
- This is a unique game - more a simulation of the role of a Napoleonic army commander in a battle, really
- A 200+plus manual is a must read
- All the bad things of ETW are not here ;) . You will find corps, orders, chain of command, historical formations, meticulously attention to historical detail in everything from uniforms, commanders, etc., proper behaviour of units - routs before melee, prisioners - adequate grand tactical AI, etc, etc.
- All the "good" things of ETW are also not here :D : 3D graphics are sub-par compared to today standards, and there is no campaign, the GUI is "clunky"...
- Complete editors are available - OOB, map, doctrines

Some improvements in the game are to be expected, specially in AI and in some "quirks" in what the 3D engine shows in regard to what is happening in the game engine.

Nevertheless, to all true strategy/wargame gamers, the efforts of an almost lonely man (JMM) should be recognized and rewarded, IMHO

If you want a demo, better wait a few more days, for a new one. The first demo had some nasty bugs, that in a 2nd version (issued to the pre-orders) had for the most part been ironed out. In a few days a new improved demo should be available.

Oh...this game looks like the best representation of linear tactic in 3D i've seen so far. Also like the natural sounds - it gives a lot to the game (hope that´s ingame sounds).

Few are the developers which really care about making the best AI possible, whatever it means in time and money spent. Jean-Michel (Histwar) and Dave O'Connors (Panther Games) are among them. They are 'Defender of the Faith' for me :)

It is one of the most difficults tasks IMHO... and really, a bad AI can ruin your game completelly... :(
If the AI cannot even "understand" the rules that you set on the game, then you have an epic fail... and no, I will not mention the game I am thinking right now... :siffle: :D

You should probably count in Frogboy from Stardock, too (though he's in 4X games, not historical strategy).

Indeed, I know he really desire to have the best AI possible for GalCiv and hopefully Elemental. Having an AI giving the feeling it perceives its surrounding or understand some of your motive is a great thing (like when you start massing fleets for invasion and you get contacted by an AI in GalCiv).

Just a quick update on the evolution of this great game (HWLG)

JMM continues to give incredible support to the game (only comparable to our beloved Pocus and Phil, really). The last 2e patch made some outstanding corrections and the game achieves the feel of a Napoleonic battle like never done before.
Lots of mods, including units graphics and textures, maps, oobs, scenarios (even the Peninsular War) are available.
For those interested, multiplayer is up and running, with battles being fought simultaneously across 3 real continents :bonk: without no connection problems. PBEM also seems to be faultless.
For the rest (like me), no worries, because the AI is perfectly capable of wiping the floor with our armies (and is steadily improving).

The forums are a relaxed and friendly meeting place, with very active french and english speaking communities.

Do yourself a favor and check it out. Specially if you like Napoleonic warfare and/or are a serious wargamer, you are missing out on a true gem if you don't.

Can you tell us what kind of DRM, if any, this game has?

Thanks for your help.

It is similar to Ageod's

When you buy the game, you receive a serial number key, that you have to introduce in the instalation. You can install the game in several PCs, without problems - I have them installed in 2.

A few images speak better than words, sometimes.

Here is a link to a video made by Cavalier, one of the players of HWLG, from an Austerlitz battle played over the internet. It gives a good example of what we can get with this game. Versus AI is also (very) good, IMHO.

(watching replays of the battles is extremely easy, and is a LOT of fun, too, BTW)

Ressurecting this old thread just to inform potential grognards out here that the game Histwar (HWLG) is alive and well, and indeed improving steadily with constant work by the dev, JMM (that works essentialy alone) :coeurs:

The latest (beta) patch, 03c, not only gives the possibility to play battles with a graphical representation of the forces in scales of 1:2 and 1:1, but has also added multi-core support ! ;)
Impressive looking battles, with literally hundreds of thousands of men in the battlefield, and great fluidity !

Yes, but that Gettysburg mod has a big problem: no proper squares (the engine does not handle squares, they were not used in the ACW) :( , which for me makes it pointless.

I am hoping someday Norb will make a Napoleonic game...

Directly to JMM

There is a link to the shop there, with several options, ranging from the simple digital download to the Napoleon box, with personalized CD, printed manual and cards, etc.

Thanks to Franciscus
It is very elegant and good game indeed.
But it needs adequate hardware requirement to run the game.(I have stone -age core due 6300 :mdr :)
Massive "War in the East" hex battles doesn't need the requirement but to feel the terrain and the atmosphere it is needed I guess in this game. I recommend the game to everyone interested in tactical wargames in 3d representation but didn't like Napoleon Total war for quick mouse control requirement. It is much deeper than that.

But if you can't play with it, you can always use it as a OOB and uniforms database. Its probably the most comprehensive on/off line. (seriously ^^)

Yes for 1/1 scale OOB, I will ask graphic card vendor about it :)
I have already invited to play in the clubs so it points out good community. As my first impression through the game with tutorials, it is obvious it has good tactical base engine underneath. But is it good to hear as opinion it has very correct OOB,
thanks.

Hello

If anybody out there is still following the adventure of HistWar, let me inform you that version 2 of this unique game, "HistWar: Napoleon" is going to be released on December 2nd.

Check here a trailer with in-game images: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4hUKfN_v1I :w00t:

Until release the basic game version can be bought at a discount, so, if anyone is interested, better go get it ;)

More info about the game here:
http://napoleon.histwar.fr

(PS: HistWar's creator, JMM, has decided to offer several game versions, with increasing prices, in a "kickstarter-like" way to get more funds for the project from those players willing and/or with means to do it. Anyhow, the cheapest one has the full game, editors, etc, and all future updates (except a planned expansion, "Wellington"), and it was the one I bought)

Regards
