"The Calm and the Storm" World War II game

Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:55 pm

A new strategy game that was actually supposed to be for classroom students to learn about World War II.

I've tried the demo and like the game a lot. The interface is clean and easy to use, the graphics are basic, but nice to look at and the options in terms of gameplay are nicely done.

A new and improved demo was released in early January.

game is out. From some threads in The Wargamer, the game seems rather interesting, even if a bit 'sand-box' on the edge (or free form)

Is it me or the game looks way too much like HoI? :siffle:

At first I was interested, but after reading about wild outcomes and nations having massive numbers of armored divisions early in the game, I figure that it is a bit to fantastical for my taste. This always seems to happen with historical strategy games, as opposed to historical wargames. Wargames are more focused on a particular battle/war and results usually don't stray to far from historical probability, while strategy games, such as Making History, by allowing a more freeform game, usually stray very far from hisorical probability and eventually become pure fantasy.

That's why I like the AGEOD system. There is enough freedom to pursue victory in several different ways, but the ways possible would also have been present to our historical counterparts. No Turkish intervention in the AWI for instance but the ability to forstall French intervention. No guaranteed historical outcomes but some plausible uncertainty. I am really excited about the announced upcoming games and look forward to the next title after Vainglory of Nations.

I have played the demo and I found many interesting things , but military units are too "generic" ones with minimal stats info, unlike HOI2. On the other hand , economy seems to be more complex.
But the worst thing appeared when I launched a scenario 1939 with Germany :
After Germany declared war on Poland, URSS indicated their will to seize the Baltic States and immediately France declared war on URSS !
With that , WWII is going to take a strange direction...not especially what I prefer...

mmm... and that's a 1939 scenario... in which, one supose the triggers for war should be more historical... :tournepas
I am really keeping my hands out of that game... :siffle:

I read an example of Spain declaring war on Belgium out of the blue. Stuff like that and very ahistorical OOBs really turned me off very quickly. The economy does look quite nice though. The devs are working on a patch that will address these issues so I will keep my eyes on how things progress.
