The war will be over by Christmas - a new GE UE mod PBEM AAR - no Entente please

Sat Nov 21, 2015 9:49 am

The first big decisons are done - I will go as Germany with Schlieffenplan again and my trusted ally Durk (A-H) will go for Serbia. This game I will try to keep Turkey as long out of the war as possible, as the Armenien Massacre just does a lot of harm to the CP diplomacy and could bring Italy very quickly to the WE. I´ll also send my ambassador quickly to Italy to keep them out of the war as long as possible. I go for Schlieffenplan, as I need to weaken the WE as much as possible, to be able to centrate on Russia the next two years after that and hopefully kick them together with A-H out of the war. This may keep me busy until middle of 1915 and I will pull in every single unit that mobilizes to have as much CB as possible. Next turn the action will start...In the spirit of the hybris of all powers involved in WWI - we believe strongly, that the war will be over by Christmas (but we do remark, that we did not say which year ;-P)
My AARs are for people who do not take themselves and the historical background too serious - I love micro and detailed long term plans - but also a naughty and ironic humour and humerous hybris - so have fun - always happy to see questions, remarks and comments ;-D

Here are the countries that think they can stop the CP - no problem - the more enemies the more glory ;-P
Only Luxemburg makes a good decision...

Lets discuss challenges and chances of the war plans...
I am happy with them so far - only the CZAR plan of Russia menas a very hard challenge for my A-H ally. Russia can be quite threatening for A-H without the help of Germany - as I plan to stay long time in the West - to do as much damage to the WE as possible, before entrenchment happens, A-H will have to retreat quite far and stay alive until I can come for aid and take away steam from the Russians. Also I hope Hindenburg will fire - as far as I know it needs Russian troops on German soil to do so. The AI would not be smart enough to avoid it - but a good human player could be - maybe that should be our first house rule - The Russina player has to send at least one unit to German soil. Or it could be changed and just happen automatically after a while - what do you think Altaris? I am thinking of sending my forces from East Prussia to the South to aid A-H, as I will send all other forces top the West to hurt the WE as much as possible...I do not mind loosing a few cities in East Prussia - I could leave a defensive force of 600 - 1000CB in Königsberg.
Lets see what will happen and how the A-H will fare against Russia - very essential is a quick success against Serbia - then Austria should be able to defend, until my forces arrive from the West.

First moves...and plans...Usually I could cut in Vanilla in France as shown in black colour - but the rules, that I can only move with wheels around major roads and rails, would mean, that I have to walk North through Belgium first and then move back South to France - so instead I will move back to Germany and then attack with about 3000CB directly Longwy (no river crossing and no dug in bonus for my opponent - so should be fine if my units fight together) - the fort Longwy could hinder my further movement until it falls - but it should do fall rather quickly and then I hope I can push the French armies constantly onward from turn to turn - winning one battle after the other...even if I have a small delay I should alway be able to move onward with superior CB. The rest of the movements drawn in red - just standard moves and splitting the armies with penalties into one corps and one army (all three of them).
In addition I have sent my submarines to spy around the North sea, send my ambassador to Italy and my two diplomats to Bulgaria and Romania. I hope for some quick raids on the British and French fleets and I did print money and ordered generals. I also send back my raiders to add to the firepower of my fleet and to use them as spies in European waters, maybe also the Blockade Box...

Turn 2 - lets discuss the events:

I played the Boers War as it keeps British troops a bit busy and my opponent played the Neutrals Blockade, which is giving me a good start with the diplomatic game. Hunger only gets dangerous, if higher levels are achieved and I shoukd be able to hinder that with my fleet as long as the British player does not concentrate his whole fleet ;-D The Anglo-Japanese treaty menas one more enemy for me - the more enemies - the more glory ;-D I had to replay my Italian and Bulgarian diplomats, as they failed the first time. I am still trying to keep the Ottomans out as long as possible, due to the bad effect on diplomacy...

Lets discuss the strategic situation:

I am waiting with my attack on Longwy - as I asked Altaris and he told me in the mod, even units that are not entrenched, will profit from the new trench terrain and bonus for the defender that forts are displaying. In general last time (Paths of Glory) I tried to encircle French and British to be able to wipe them out. I am changing my strategy this time - because encirclement does just not work, only forts and trenches really seem to keep retreating units from passing through up to three provinces, including river crossings with minor losses. So I will attack my enemies head on, trying to push them as quickly behind the defensive lines, that I will try to reach. That may mean higher losses (so I have to pay more for replacments), but could also end in being able to cover more terrotory and gain an ideal defensive line, which will free up many units for Russia. My ideal defensive lines will be from Verdun - through Reims to Le Have - but I will not risk to loose units, if I cannot reach there fast enough or take the risk of loosing a battle due to too much resistance. So lets see where it goes (My ideal defensive line marked in black).

In the West still standard moves and I send some corps ahead to hunt down the Belgian units and to not allow them to completly mess up my rail lines...I wait for the forces of Longwy to either retreat - which will mean I will follow them after taking Longwy and will try to push them onward. If they stay longer in Longwy, they will not be able to stop the andvance of my ohther forces in Belgium - so either is ok. I will be delayed through Longwy by chasing them - but if they would want to dig in, they would need several turns to do so - which I will not give them - so no problem with a small delay - I will try to always bring in superior firepower and push them onward. My fleet is still gathering in force - to be bale to to some nice raids on the French and British ;-D

In East France I am going for Nancy straight away and look for opportunities to go for Belfort and Epinal.

In East Prussia - I am sending slowly (to not waste rail capacity which I will need to bring in all the mobilized reserves next turn) about half the force of East Prussia nex to Lodz, to put some pressure on the Russian and aid my Austrian ally. I will send most forces next turn westwards, as I will try to grap as much territory in the West as possible and I would run out of Steam without these reserves. But I will need to wtach the Russians closely - if they put too much pressure on the Austrians, I will need to send more forces East again. I have been building all the mountain corps (they give a movement bonus) and some artillery in the East - as fater movement will only be helpful in the East - at the time that they are finished...

The battles:

Germany stormed two fortresses - but did not gain any NM. As far as I understood - if I destroy units I should gain NM for that - am I wrong or did something change? Would be happy to have an explanation....

The strategy:

In the West we have basically two moves - one to Antwerp to take the fortress and the other to Mons - I guess at Mons we will meet the BEF. The move to Mons includes as much CB as possible, so we can quickly hit the BEF and push it onwards. A minor move to Genth to take the big cities from the WE in the North ASAP - so they do not gain MP and Cash from it anymore and to repair destroyed rails - for the purpose of reparing rails, I also leave a division in Bruxelles. We will also take Longwy - at least start sieging it.

In the East a very interesting situation developed. I kinda stopped a French army on the move to the South by moving my Wilhelm von Preußen army in its way. Now three things can happen - depending on for whom MTSG will work out - a major defeat for me due to the two French armies attacking in MTSG, a major victory for me due to my two German armies joining MTSG and my 4th army with Albrecht of Würtemberg arriving in time (3 days needed and defensive posture) - or nothing as the French will not attack or retreat. Whatever will happen I surely delayed that French army for whatever purpose it was send ;-D

I am pulling 95% of my active reserves to the West to keep my offensive going ;-D

In the East I am forming up a small force to take Lodz and to put some pressure on Russia - trying to relieve Austria.

Somehow something weired is happening - all my leaders in Eastern France keep on switching 1-2 points down and up again in their leader ratings shown. Von Hauser switched last turn, even though moved closer to the GHQ to 1-0-1 even though he is a 3-1-1 before - now he is a 3-1-1 again...same with Prinz von Preußen this turn and Albrecht von Würtemberg this turn - I wonder what it is...as they should not be out of range of the GHQ, or?

Our Allies:

It looks like A-H is under heavy pressure of Russia - lets hope the defenses will hold. But even if not the Russian forces should get supply problems if they try to march South of the Tatras. At Serbia A-H could take Belgarde rather quickly and hopefully all of Serbia - so they can send their majority of forces against Russia soon - whis the best of luck for my allies ;-D

Turn 4 - Events and Battles:
We caught one of the small Belgian forces - which is good - because they will not ne anle to destroy rails anymore and if we destroy them next turn (they are still in the same province with our stack) they won´t add to the Bristish CB ;-D
And the best of possible results against the French in Easter France - that will open up the opportunity to take Verdun - if we can repeat that success ;-D I earned my first 2 NM with this battle - so I am with -1 NM due to being brought back to neutral - at 121 NM ;-D
I will not play the Rape of Begium card, as it gives a diplomatic penalty and does not work yet, in this version of the mod...

Unusual exciting times so aerly in game ;-D

The most exciting one being the BEF rushing out to - I guess - free the major Belgian force, which I was able to trap in Bruxelles and I am rushing in forces (coming in in 2-3 days) with which I should be able to destroy the force in Bruxelles the next turn - with hopefully a big NM boost ;-D
I attack the BEF with von Kluck and another corps - depening on, if the corps will join the battle - bringing in 1.6k - 2.1k CB againts the 1 k of the BEF. Now the BEF is a beast in combat, but I should be able to beat it - if I catch it - I need 2 days to reach it - so lets hope for the best - due to random factors I could win the battle, loose the battle or the BEF could escape to Bruxelles - but would then be trapped next turn...especially with my force in Antwerp being freed up next turn...very exciting indeed ;-D
I plan to send the super heavy artillery wether to Longwy - if it does not fall quickly enough - or straight away to the East, to help to take the Russian fortresses quickly...
I will wait until the forces of Longwy and Atwerp join up with Kluck, before further moving into France - also my reserve units should arrive in then next two turns - so I always have superior CB to push the WE forces behind the ideal defense line...If I can beat the BEF next turn - that would be the first step to achieve the goal - as only a WE force in good shape and strong defensive positions can hold off the German forces ;-D
In the East of France I can repeat the battle of last turn or trap the French army at Valle de Moselle from moving on - both would be great - and I should be to start sieging Verdun the next two turns - because it is wide open and undefended...Nancy has the first breach and I plan to siege all fortresses in East France until surrender, because of the guaranteed NM gain for a surrendering garrison. So it looks like I can defeintly conquer two of the 4 possibel and meaningful fortresses - not bad - still waiting for an opportunity to move on Belfort and Epinal - even if I can only keep the French armies in East France - they will be missed for the defense of the West - so great news any way - lets see ;-D

My reserve units will mostly come in, in the next two turns, as I was able to move all of them by rail last turn - that should grant me superior CB for quite a while in the Wets - things look great for Germany right now ;-D I profit a lot from the aggressive approach of my WE opponents ;-D

The fleet mangement:

I am finishing my sub screen and await the first German raiders soon - I had last turn 14400CB in one fleet and 2500CB in the other - this turn they changed to 12400 and 1700 CB - the big fleet staying in harbor, just as last turn and with the same leaders as last turns - so I will have next turn wether 16500CB or 1400CB - depending if the weiredness is repeated - when the German raiders arrive I will have another 1k+CB added to it. As you can see the British fleet has only 15400CB, so given time and loss of cohesion - I could attack them on a fast raid as the Blockade Box is only 4 days away from my German port...but of course it could be a trap with a big British stack just waiting for me to do so - that is why I will wait for now and try to spot, where the rest of the British fleet could be ;-D

The East:
No Russians showing up around Königsberg - but it would be anyways very hard to take due to me still having the Hoffmann card (loss of 66% cohesion for a Russian stack) as soon as the Russinas enter German territory and Hindenburg - the best leader in the game would show up ;-D Alos fortresses have a trench terrain and effect - that means I have very high defensive bonusses with my dug in force there and trenches reduce the combat width - so that I could defend with a much smaller force against a much bigger one - we will still see lots of it in he West...
My Eastern offensive force should be gathered next turn and will then march on Lodz - my minimal goal for this year in the East - the max goal being Warsaw and surroundings - hopefully I will remove some pressure from my A-H allies by attacking there as they seem to get beaten quite hard...

Belgrade is besieged and my A-H ally seems to gain the upper hand in Serbia - yay ;-D
But at the Russian front he seems to get battered and pressed hard - I hope he can hold off the Russians long enough - we agreed, that he will send my a request for help early enough, if things go too much south...so lets see....

Turn 5 Battles:
Great battles with the French - but not so good one taking out the force at Bruxelles - even though showing the big potential of German forces - only von Linsingen got commited twice and two German divisions got mauled togther with the Belgians - at least we gained lots of NM ;-D

Strategy:

In the West I need to wait for the von Bülow force and maybe also for von Hauser - but also the Reserves are coming in quickly - so in the next 1-2 turns I should be able to attack the big stack at Lille - just want to be sure I´ll also win - so that I can keep on pushing ;-D. The Belgians will be wiped out in Bruxelles and I am sending the super heavy arti to von Hauser to take Longwy quickly and free up his force ASAP...Sad that the BEF escaped - but I will hit it soon enough ;-D
I promote von Linsingen and von Richthofen so that I have better army commanders with offensive skills...
Other than that repairing rail lines, so that my offense does not get stopped by lack of supply...

In East France the breach at Nancy was repaired, but I trapped and beat up a French army and hope to be able to destroy it - if that works, they will miss it a lot in the defense of the West and I may be able to move to my perfect defense line ;-D Also moving on Verdun to start the siege there...After that I will send additional forces West or attack Toul ;-D

A small starting offense in the East aimed on Lodz and the defense of Königsberg as before...

All together due to the very good situation in Eastern France I may be able to rush through the West as soon as all my forces have arrived and take the max possible territory from France - my offense in the West may then even force the French player to retreat forces from Eastern France to hold Paris - which could open up oppotunities to take more fortresses in Eastern France.
Looks fantastic right now ;-D

The fleet, the diplomacy and the overview:
Finally my diplomats stick and do their job - no opportunity for a raid on the Blockade Box yet and my success starts to show in NM (30 points difference between Germany and France now) and also CB ;-D

Turn 6: The Battles
Actually good battles all over - the rest of the Belgians wiped out and the French are getting more mauled - just the casualty results are frustrating the French army mauled again two more divsions of mine - that happened now the second time - even though I brought in extremly superioir numbers - somehow I wish the engine would work differently here, cause even though I am winning the battles - I cannot gain the upper hand on CB side - if my units get mauled too - somehow the engines tends to throw in the smallest stack first and bring in reinforcements much later, when the smaller force was mauled already...

Overview in the West:
My first two promotable and promoted leaders - who will hopefully bring in more offensive punsch as von Bülow and von Hauser are purely defensive leaders...
Longwy will fall this turns, as my super heavy arti is in position and I use the heavy bombardment card. Von Linsingen is alreyd checking out the Frenhc force, but will wait with the attack until von Hauser will be able to attack as well (in about two turns).
I send von Kluck ahead to attck the French force - MTSG from the two neigbouring forces is rather uncommon - the French force is actually to small to have a high chnace of joining the attack and the British force has a leader with 2 stratgeic rating so only a 60% chance to join - it is kinda a gamble, but I want to grab still as much of the Northern French territory as possible. Next turn the von Richthofen force and the von Bülow force could then attack the BEF head on...
Nearly all my reserves arrived and I am sending the first additional forces from the East of France to the West...
Repairs of the rails seems to be bugged at times - I am repairing the rail at Bruxelles already since three turns with no result...and also the flipp-flopping of the CB strength of my fleets and ratings of leaders continue....anyways still looking good for Germany ;-D I should be able to keep on pushing the WE stacks onward for quite a while and hopefully be able to finally destroy the French army in Eastern France. It is even starving now...muhaha ;-D

The East and the fleet:

Finally an opportunity seems to arise for a raid on he British fleet - two juicy targets sighted - if it is still like that next turn - I´ll go for a raid...
The offense in the East goes totally unopposed - so I´ll get more bold - to force my opponent to send units against me and take them of off A-H.

Our Allies:
Serbia looks great the Russian front still critical - but my ally told me he may soon be able to retreat forces from Serbia to stabilize the Russian front...and my attacks on Russian territory should help as well ;-D

Turn 7 the Battles:
Good battles this turn - all wins and von Kluck showed the first time, what he is really capable of...also Longwy fell - so we can use all our CB now to take as much French territory as possible...no promotions though...

The situation in the West and an overview:
After beating up the French army in Douai last turn, we will use von Kluck and von Richthofen to attack the BEF with the retreated French army this turn - that is at least 3000CB against their 1800CB - so that should be a great win again and open the way to Paris ;-D
As predicted the beaten and starving French army was again able to escape - and I could not finish it off - therefore von Moltke is threatened to get attacked - so I retreat him to the Prinz von Preussen army for now. The counter attack in Eastern Franc was beaten back as well and soon the fortresses may fall (both having one breach) - then I can send even more forces westwards - it looks like I will be able to get my ideal defensive line ;-D
A calvary corps is taking all Belgum and northern French cities...so no income for the Entente from there anymore ;-D
I hope that next turn finally the rails are repaired - as the ammunition situation is getting tight...
I played also the print money and generals card again and am sending the super heavy artillery now East...
The NM of France is dropping and mine is stable around 126 - could be higher - but keeps on returning to a neutral value ;-D

The Fleet and the East:
My fleet is on a raid with two possible targets - lets see how it will go ;-D
The offense in the East goes on - hardly any resistance and the one I meet is only good for training up my generals and hopefully destroying the Russian morale ;-D
