Map needs some corrections

Sat Aug 30, 2014 2:01 pm

The map is not very accurate. Everything is off place by at least 150km.
Zagreb is where Marburg should be, Samobor was a village in 1914- i don't know what is doing on the map. Instead of Samobor should be Celje (Zilli) and instead of Zagreb should be Maribor (Marburg). Zagreb must be moved way down south.

One town has a wrong name: it's GORICA or GöRZ but NOT Gorizia! That's the italian name and is historically incorrect for this period. They only changed the name to Gorizia after the war after it was annexed by italy...

Map corrections:

1. Rename Gorizia to Gorica or Görz (german name)
2. Rename Samobor to Celje or Zilli (german name)
3. Move Zagreb way down south
4. Where is Zagreb now put Maribor or Marburg (german name)

I never was happy with these things.
No idea why the AGEOD can't do it right. :(

London is south of the Thames, the entire regions known in Britain as "The West Country" or just South West England is named "Cornwall" (as is the county of Cornwall, also on the map), and so on. Do AGEOD ever check these things?

Lets say it's not easy to do these maps. Player input is very important, hopefully posts like these can lead to later corrections or at least imrpoved maps for future Age Engine games...

As far as I know, there are up to 3 names that can be displayed:

Image

1) the map art (in golden letters)
2) the English name just below the flag
3) the localized name (matching the language the player picked in the options)

As far as I know again, one cannot change the map art easily and English name displayed on map is common to all languages.

So what do you guys think would be best?

English on the map has never bothered as I always play in English. I would be more concerned about mistakes especially gross mislocations.

I spotted a lot of things around my home Berlin. Though this does not matter much, a few examples, just for completeness of the thread:

1) Spandau should be renamed Oranienburg
2) Potsdam makes little sense, better would be Dessau and moved toward the Elbe, or Jüterbog, which seems to have has some importance
3) Seelow makes little sense (we call it "Zickenseelow" because it is more of a village), better would be Barnim. But it is ok that there is no major city, although Strausberg comes to mind, and had a railway which goes to Küstrin

England needs some corrections as well. i'd say the following needs to be done.

1. Birmingham to be moved up one prov (to the province where the yellow Stafford place name is)
2. Coventry should be where Leicester is right now
3. Leicester should be moved one prov east (the one with the yellow Peterbrough place name is)
4. The yellow Stafford place name should be moved one province north along the railway (it's definitely further north than Shrewsbury)
5. The yellow Peterborough place name should be in the province in between Lincoln and Cambridge.

Leeds is problematic as well, but I can't see where else it could go. There are other places which aren't quite right but could just be moved within a province to make it more accurate.

But certainly the first three at least really needs to be done to be honest.

Applied your suggestions to the Region Name Google doc:

I don't think it's possible to pronounce correctly no matter how you spell it. ;)

I'm just joking around - I've taught several university courses on the First World War, and was recalling how I always stumbled over pronouncing Przemyśl. :)

I am with Canuck on this, I have a degree in linguistics and i cannot pronounce anything in the Polish language. Ever.

Caranorn, I remember my French classes as a kid in Michigan and being the budding historian that I was at the time i loved looking at maps, so I asked my French teacher 'how do you pronounce Huy?'.
She said there is no acceptable English pronunciation for that city. Freaky Belgians. ;)

Little fact, the British soldiers pronounced Ypres as Wipers when they were there, as they didn't know how it was pronounced.

The map is itself an abstraction. Do not freak out of actual region names and borders.

Quod erat demonstrandum. My French teacher said, "everyone who learned the Anglo Saxon language is corrupted for life". "Wypers" is a fine example :D , or "Hungry" instead of Hungary, or Munster instead of Münster ..
It always make me laugh how they mis-pronounce practically every place in Europe.
