In the Options menu, I always pick the fewest amount of saved games (which I believe is three games). I have just recently been getting several critical errors that caused me to go back to the menu and resume game. Sometimes this will leave me at the very beginning of my current turn and sometimes during the last time I hit the save button on that turn. Because I cycle through the units, the time I spend on each turn is usually very extensive, but I like to play that way. I try to save during my turn, especially after planning an extensive assault on my western front.
On my current turn I had the critical error and when I resumed game I was at my last save near the end of my turn but had another critical error as I cycled through the units again and came at about the same time as my last critical error (probably just coincidence) -- darn my Bulgarian troops (which are actually performing extremely well!). This second error caused a wipe out of my current turn and I have to restart at the beginning again.
I went back into Load Game options and surprisingly I had nine choices (eight of which were for my current game). These choices looked rather random - the previous turn, then 7 other turns from the previous year. I'm in May 1915 and expected just the most recent turns (especially with my constant saving).
Should I be saving under alternating game names (like thom, thom1, thom2, thom ...) instead of just saving the current game? Will that give me more chances to not have to totally re-start the turn?
This is important to me because I lost my 17 year game of PON after loading (but not saving) a bunch of saved games to do a bit of research.
