PON2-scripting recurrent revolt events - Milanese

Mon Dec 16, 2013 8:30 pm

briefly said, historical crisis are very important for chrome and as a reference for players, give them hints of what can happen. and mind you, they happened for a reason
reason is there, a decent historical simulation game has to duplicate at least the causes and mechanisms

still they may not be sufficient as some may peter out : for exemple risorgimento - in the very end, the unification of Italian nation was written on the wall, soon or late, because a failure to shrug off Austrian yoke and Vienna congress sequel just would have meant another trial later on, in other circumstances, with other allies, like sea waves slowly sap the cliff, in the end, the sea wins ...

first liberation failed, Piemontese were no match for Austrian army, lost at Novare, Radetzky decorated the Milanese roads with Italian patriots hanging on the trees like Christmas balls
(when I hear radetzky march, it's for me, passionated in history, a sound of military triumph, war, domination, charge, but not a merry waltz or circus music was long ago, but the clash between people and power of the Monarchy was terrible then, 1848 was a butchery, almost everywhere in Europe)

then Italy got French Alliance, needed a visionary statesman like Cavour, did pay by cession of Savoy (almost fully French, and would probably still have joined France, even had plebiscite not been rigged - still the home of ruling house) and Nice (Nizza - then more debatable case), but got Lombardia, way more important and 100% Italian. had to stop there temporarily - new partial failure. for perfectly sound (400 000 Prussians on the Rhine, french catholics alarmed, fear of not controlling things, desire to avoid antagonizing Austria too much) but selfish reasons, France dropped Italy half way, and Piedmont had to be content with Lombardia - still a lot.

then again, another war , with Prussian alliance - and Italy lost it - but this time was the good one, as their Prussian ally won (and france supported them getting something anyway) and Italy at last got Venetia, in spite of Custozza and Lissa.

non Austrian lands, same thing, Rome was defended by French for a long time ("our Chassepots did wonders"), and then, one day, French left, for outside causes, may be mexico, franco prussian war, could have been a war with austria, russia, colonial protection of christian minorities of Ottoman Emmpire, or a colonial war with Britain, one day or other French had to go, and Rome fell like a ripe fruit

then again, Colonial disappointments (isolation, no gain, humiliation) in Tunis, while Bismarckian system closed way to further Irredentism - backed by Germany controlling any Russian adventures that way (a mix of alliance and potential threat), Austria was out of reach for good. furthermore, Abyssinians gave a sound trouncing to Italians, making them a mock of colonial powers

as is told in "the Lord of Rings" -" but it is not the end of all things" - Tripolitania and Cyrenaica were obtained by closing bonds with Entente and distanciation with Triplice, Trieste and Trento were claimed and obtained after Italy opted for "sacred selfishness" and entered Great War - even if gains were a disappointment, and still in spite of Caporetto (Italians fought utmost bravely on the Piave , point is not here, point is thgat, here again, they couldn't have won alone by themselves in a duel)

so what is the point :

point is that nationalisms were bound to win, soon or late, as were colonial liberation movements one century later - question was when ! (and in what circumstances) - this in spite, in Italian example, of manifest weakness - you just try again when circumstances and correlation of strength favour it

surviving 70 years, from 1848 (could have exploded) til 1918 was no mean achievement for Austria, who played a delaying game
Austria survived because many nations felt that, once a minimum autonomy was obtained, they would be better off that under a stricter foreign rule, like Germany's or Russia's - so thought in general the Poles, Croatians, Hungarians once they were associated to rule (and became as harsh masters that they had been rebellious subjects), part of Czech in spite of partly subordinate status so thought (for czech, Austro Slavism may have made some sense, looking at 1938 and 1968) but not Serbs, Rumanians, and Italians, whose loyalty to monarchy verged the absolute zero

so, Hungarians (til compromise), Italians, Serbs, Bulgarians, Greeks, Poles were bound to revolt till success, provoking sometimes international crisis - ditto for passive resistance of Alsacians and Lorrains, where incidents were bound to happen and cause friction, Rumania..

for a starter, the Italians
