Error in Patch 1.02

Thu Jan 23, 2014 9:05 pm

In Patch 1.02 the map was altered in Minnesota. In the original map before the update it had St. Anthony as the city on the west bank of the Mississippi, and St. Paul as the City on the east bank.
In version 1.02 The city on the West bank is St. Paul, and the city on the East is Minneapolis.

Reverting the map back to how it was in the original version is correct, or Simply flip Minneapolis and St. Paul around.

Another note on Brigades. At the beginning of the game for the union reinforcements 3rd division 1st brigade is incorrect. It is listed as being the 5th & 11 Mass., 1st & 4th Michigan. It should be the 5 & 11th Mass., 1st Minn, 4th & 5th Penn.

And if you are looking for more elite units I suggest creating around June 1861 in Cincinnati the 9th Ohio & 2nd Minn under McCook. This elite brigade fought with distinction in Mill springs, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. The 9th Ohio was an especially elite regiment they were nicknamed the "Dutch Devils" even though there was only 1 member of the regiment born in the Netherlands; a majority of the regiment was comprised of German veterans.

Dutch most of the time referred to Germans “Deutsch” and not Netherlands Dutch. Pennsylvania Dutch is a prime example. They were Germans and spoke German. Dutch applied pretty much to both nationalities.

Both languages also originate from the same prime language in the middle ages.
So they aren't that different.

Sorry I can’t find any serious reason to make that Brigade elite.

It was the 3rd Brigade of 3rd Division, Army of the Cumberland.

87th In
2nd Mi
9th Oh
35th Oh

9th Ohio went berserk after the death of their first commander and burned and looted the area where it happened but that shows more a susceptibility to propaganda and lack of discipline than elite solders. They also had a lot of names.

9th Ohio Infantry
Bloody Dutch
Dutch Devils
McCook's Dutchman
Turner Regiment
die Neuner
1st German Ohio Regt.

If we take their bayonet charge as evidence most regiments on both sides would be elite. Col. Robert L. McCook had a brigade of 9th Oh and 2nd Mi in 1st Div, Army of the Ohio at Mill Springs but was a part of Steedman’s brigade at Perryville. That was an even larger brigade.

If you want to discuss it more, I guess we should go to the history club.

Ol' Choctaw

First let me compliment you on your knowledge and research on the 3rd brigade of the 3rd Division, Army of the Cumberland. I did not know the other nicknames for the 9th Ohio.

I only included 9th Ohio and 2nd Mn, and not the rest of the 3rd brigade, as elite part because those two regiments were together from Mill Springs though Atlanta.

However I am not sure what criteria is needed for a brigade to get an elite ratting. I agree that more then a single charge at Mill Springs is needed to be considered elite. I feel that the 9th Ohio and 2nd MN best fighting was on the Snodgrass Hill at Chickamauga.

How do you decide what makes a brigade Elite?

What make a unit elite?

Tough question. Most units think of themselves as elite, even those who have never seen combat. A lot has to do with what others though of them and if they could be relied upon to not only do what they were sent to do but exceed expectations in doing it. How the behave not just in victory but also in defeat. What the enemy thought of them as well.

I think what you have done in recommending this brigade is good and a step along the way of reaching some consensus on it.

I would have much less problem calling the 2nd Minnesota elite than I would the 9th Ohio.

Part of the problem is that the 9th Ohio is pretty spotty when you look at their performance.

Also, the brigade as a whole was only committed in a few battles. For an elite brigade one would think it would be the first called upon for nearly any action.

Almost every unit had its moments.

To contrast your two regiments, have a look at the 1st and 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles, often brigaded together. They are not considered elite either but look over their battle records and tell us what you think.

I think you will find they often faced one another.
