I do not know steam protocols, but if were a standard and not a steam install it would indicate the lack of a clean install. So I would recommend removing the game from the computer, restart the computer and reinstall.

The logs are important in these cases.

Yes, the logs tell you when the game stopped loading. Very helpful.
